The Football League Second Division 1979/80 was the 77th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 18, 1979 and ended on May 12, 1980.

Second division champions were Leicester City and the second and third placed AFC Sunderland and Birmingham City also rose to the Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1980/81, the three first division clubs Bristol City , Derby County and Bolton Wanderers ranked in the table below took the places. FC Fulham , FC Burnley and Charlton Athletic had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Grimsby Town and the Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday ranked behind them took the vacant positions in the following season 1980/81 .
