qualification

Harry Kane , qualifying top scorer

For the qualification the English team was drawn from the Czech Republic, Kosovo, Bulgaria and Montenegro.

Overall, national coach Gareth Southgate , who has coached the team since October 2016, used 30 players, only captain Harry Kane and Harry Maguire played all eight games. Goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Raheem Sterling had seven appearances each . Callum Hudson-Odoi , James Maddison , Tyrone Mings , Mason Mount , Declan Rice and Fikayo Tomori played their first international match in the qualifiers.

The top scorer with twelve goals, four of which came from a penalty, was Harry Kane, who scored at least one goal in every game and was also the top scorer overall in qualifying. This is the second time that an Englishman has scored the most goals after Kevin Keegan , who was the top scorer in qualifying for the 1980 European Championship. The second best English goalscorer Raheem Sterling finished with eight goals together with two other players in seventh place in the qualifying scorer list . Their first international goals were scored in the qualification by Tammy Abraham (to the 7-0 final score against Montenegro), Michael Keane (to the 1-1 equalizer in the 5-1 win against Montenegro), Mason Mount (to the 4-0 final score against the Kosovo in the first minute of stoppage time) and Harry Winks (to 1-0 lead in the same game) and Jadon Sancho (to 4-1 and 5-1 in a 5-3 win against Kosovo). A total of ten players contributed to 34 qualifying goals. The English also benefited from three own goals by opposing players. With 37 goals in eight games, the English had the best goal rate of all teams with 4.625 goals per game.

The National Football Center in St George's Park in May 2012, a few months before it opened

On March 25, 28 and 31, 2021, the first qualifying matches for the 2022 World Cup were against San Marino (5: 0), Albania (2: 0) and Poland (2: 1).

On June 2nd and 6th, the team played in Middlesbrough against EM participants Austria and Romania , which are not qualified for the EM, and each won 1-0. During the European Championship, the English national football team stayed in a Hilton Hotel near Burton upon Trent and trained there at St George's Park National Football Center .

Squad

The final roster was announced on June 1, 2021. Ben Godfrey , Mason Greenwood , Jesse Lingard , Aaron Ramsdale , James Ward-Prowse , Ollie Watkins and initially Ben White were not included in the preliminary roster . Godfrey, Lingard, Ward-Prowse, Watkins and White were still used on June 2nd and 6th in the friendly matches against Austria and Romania.

In the final phase of the test match against Austria, the nominated Trent Alexander-Arnold was injured and left the squad. As a replacement, Ben White was only nominated after the game against Romania on June 6th. Due to persistent hip problems, Aaron Ramsdale moved to the team after the first group game for Dean Henderson . After close contact with Billy Gilmour (from group opponent Scotland ) who tested positive on June 21, Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount had to go into quarantine for several days and miss at least the last group game against the Czech Republic.

Finals

For the finals, England had also applied to host games with Wembley Stadium and were initially awarded the two semi-finals and the final. After UEFA revoked the hosting of three group matches and one round of 16 and London awarded Brussels , most of the European Championship matches will take place in England. During the draw, England's Croatia and qualifying opponents the Czech Republic were drawn as well as a team that had to qualify via the playoffs in autumn 2020, which the Scots were the last team to achieve. There have been ten games against Croatia so far with five wins, two draws and three defeats. In 2018 they met three times, initially the English lost 2-1 in the World Cup semi-finals, in the first game of the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League there was a goalless draw in Croatia, and the English won the second leg 2-1. Against the Czech Republic there were two wins, a draw and a defeat, the only one for the English in qualifying. Scotland was the first and is the most frequent opponent of the English. In 114 games there were 48 wins, 25 draws and 41 defeats. At the EM 1996 both played against each other in the group stage and the English won 2-0. The last defeat against the Scots was in November 1999, followed by three wins and most recently a draw in June 2017.

If the English team group winner, she would - subject to the retention of the venues - again in London against the second in Group F with Germany, world champion France and defending champions Portugal play in second a day earlier in Copenhagen against the Second Group E z . B. Poland, Sweden or Spain. If she were one of the four best third, were either the winners of Group B with Belgium, the winner of Group C with the Netherlands or the winner of Group E opponents in the second round, and then in Seville or Budapest or in Glasgow would play .

Knockout round

Even before the last group game, it was clear that the English team would be at least one of the four best third-placed teams in the round of 16. With the win against the Czechs they pushed them from first place and met Germany as group winners again in London , the second in group F. In 32 games so far, there have been 13 wins and losses and six draws. Of the last three games, all friendlies, both won one, the last game ended goalless in November 2017 at Wembley Stadium. With a 2-0 win, England reached the quarter-finals in Rome against the winners of the last knockout round Sweden against Ukraine. There were four wins, two draws and one defeat against Ukraine in seven previous games. The last victory came in the group stage of the EM 2012, followed by two draws in the qualification for the 2014 World Cup . After the biggest win against the Ukrainians, the English return to Wembley Stadium, where they will face Denmark. The Danes had previously been won twelve times in 21 games, drawn five times and lost four games. The Danes won the last game in October 2020 in the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League in London 1-0, with Christian Eriksen scoring the goal with a penalty. Before that there were two narrow wins for the English (2-1 and 1-0) in friendly games, which were ten and seven years ago respectively, and a goalless draw in the Nations League first leg. With the win after extra time, the English moved into the European Championship final for the first time, where they will meet Italy in London. Against the Italians there have been eight wins, nine draws and ten defeats in 27 games so far, making Italy one of the only four teams against which the English have a negative record. They met twice in the European Championship finals: in 1980 Italy won 1-0 in the group stage, in 2012 Italy won the penalty shoot-out in the quarter-finals after 120 minutes without a goal. The last two games in March 2015 and 2018, respectively, were friendlies and ended 1-1. The last game before that, the Italians won 2-1 in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup. Both were eliminated after the group stage. England last won 2-1 against Italy in Bern in August 2012 . A special game between the two was the Battle of Highbury , which England won 3-2 against the reigning world champions.
