The main road 17 is a main road in Switzerland .

It leads from Leibstadt in the canton of Aargau on the Rhine into the Glarnerland and over the Klausen Pass into the Urnerland .

meaning

The main road is only of secondary importance for motorized individual traffic on the section between the greater Zurich area and the Linth plain , as motorized transit traffic can use the A3 motorway there , which, however, in contrast to Hauptstrasse 17, runs on the left side of Lake Zurich . The cantonal motorways and roads A52 and A53 can be used between Zurich and Rapperswil , but they run through the Zurich Oberland and not like the main road that follows the right bank of Lake Zurich. The higher-class alternative routes are therefore all a bit off the beaten track. On the other sections, especially in the Glarus region, main road 17 is the main connection axis.

The main road on the Klausenpass section is closed in winter .

history

Zurich

Between 1832 and 1850, the Canton of Zurich invested several million francs in road construction. During these years the Landstrasse (second class road) was built from Zurich to the canton border near Feldbach, which cost 427,989 francs.

Glarus

Systematic road construction in the canton of Glarus did not begin until 1835, when the canton of Glarus set up a professional road administration. The road from Schwanden to Luchsingen was built in 1837–1839. In 1845 the road to Linthal was completed. The Klausen Pass was only expanded into a road in 1899. The section between Niederurnen and Glarus has been a national road (N17) since 2020 .

The street begins in Leibstadt at Hauptstrasse 7 and leads through the Zurich Unterland via Niederweningen and Dielsdorf to the city center of Zurich. From there, the main road leads along the shores of Lake Zurich to Rapperswil in San Gaulle . The road follows the Obersee to Schmerikon . By Linthebene about Kaltbrunn is Ziegelbrücke reached. There the street crosses the Linth and thus arrives in the canton of Glarus , where the main street is the main axis that connects the canton capital of Glarus . The ascent to Klausen begins in Linthal . The apex is at 1948  m above sea level. M. Continue through the Schächental opens the road in Uri capital of Altdorf in the main road 2 , the Gotthard road .

The total length of this predominantly non-directional thoroughfare is around 178 kilometers.
