Jørgen Ingmann-Pedersen (* 26. April 1925 in Copenhagen , † 21st March 2015 in Holte , Rudersdal Municipality ) was a Danish guitarist , who in the field of jazz and popular music worked.

Career

As the middle of three sons of a railroad worker, Ingmann began playing the violin at the age of 10 . After school he began training in the printing trade, but saved a lot of his salary to buy his first guitar. To his father's horror, he left his secure job and joined the orchestras of Borge Roger Henrichsen and Bertrand Bech.

During the German occupation of Denmark he got an engagement with Svend Asmussen , one of the most famous jazz musicians in Scandinavia. Ingmann was a member of the Danish jazz violinist's orchestra from 1945 to 1958. On June 9, 1944, Ingmann was involved in the recording of music on shellac record for the tracks That's My Weakness / How I'm Doin ', Hey Hey . This, his first involvement in a recording, received praise from Asmussen.

During this time, Ingmann met the singer Grethe Clemmensen and married her in 1956. At the end of the 1950s, he performed first with the Jörgen Ingmann Quartet and then in a duo with his wife.

His career as a solo guitarist (Jørgen Ingmann and His Guitar) began after Ingmann had heard the trick recordings of the American guitarist Les Paul and wanted to try out such recordings himself. Ingmann's own guitar cartoons were recorded with a five-track tape recorder and mixed together to mono recordings by his sound engineer Phillip Foss until 1968. Foss believed that “ stereo ” was just a passing fad. Ingmann's LP recordings did not appear in stereo until 1968.

Single: Apache

In January 1961 he released his version of the English number 1 hit Apache of the Shadows - which could not be placed in the USA - and made the instrumental an international hit. Among other things, he reached in the US No. 2 (because his photograph was published there before recording the Shadows), Canada 4th place in Germany 6th place financially most successful but was Ingmanns own composition Echo Boogie , to the B-side " Apache ”appeared. The recording was used for years by the North German Broadcasting Corporation as the signature tune for the program The Current Sport Show , and in 1972 it was re-recorded in stereo.

Together with his wife, Ingmann took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1963 and won Dansevise for Denmark for the first time with the “ Jazzwalzer ” . In the German version as The summer went over , they also came into the German charts.

In 1964 he had another top 10 hit in Germany with the Drina March composed by Stanislav Binički , and it was in the charts here until 1966. After that, the Ingmanns continued to make music as a duo, primarily for the Danish market, but were also repeatedly seen on various broadcasts on ARD and ZDF as well as on German television until the end of the 1960s .

In 1975, Jørgen Ingmann divorced his wife, who he remarried in the 1980s and who died in 1990. Subsequently he was mainly active as a composer.

Ingmann died on March 21, 2015 at the age of 89 in Holte, north of Copenhagen.
