The Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe Aktiengesellschaft ( KVB ) operates as a transport company the public transport of the city of Cologne with the Stadtbahn Köln and the urban bus lines, as well as the Cologne cable car .

KVB AG is 90% owned by Stadtwerke Köln , the remaining 10% owned by the City of Cologne . The KVB is a member of the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV). The transport conditions and the collective tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) apply on all lines of the KVB .

history

The first horse tram operated by a private Ernst Hardt company on behalf of the City of Cologne was put into operation on May 20, 1877 between Deutz and Kalk. On January 1, 1900, the operation of the horse-drawn tram passed into municipal ownership. The city began work on electrifying rail operations shortly afterwards. The first electric tram cars drove through Cologne from 1901, the first motorized omnibuses from 1925. From 1950 to 1959 the trolleybus made a brief guest appearance in the city with a line.

Cologne light rail network

In 1963, the city began building an underground light rail network. The first section could be used from 1968. Protests against the KVB took place in October 1966 when the fare for schoolchildren and students was to be increased by more than half. Around 10,000 schoolchildren and students protested in a three-day campaign on Rudolfplatz before the protest was violently broken up by the police. In cooperation with Clouth-Gummiwerke , the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe developed in 1972 the Kölner Ei , an elastic rail bearing that is often used in a ballastless superstructure .

From 1978 lines of the Cologne-Bonn Railways (KBE) were integrated into the light rail network. In 1987 the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) was founded, the KVB were a founding member. The tram museum of the KVB in Thielenbruch was opened in 1997, numerous vehicle series are kept here that were previously on the streets of Cologne.

On August 23, 1999 the worst accident in the company's history occurred. Due to technical and human failure, a CitySprinter prototype drove unchecked at the Christophstraße stop. 68 people were injured, eight seriously.

The KVB celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2002. The current major project by the city of Cologne and the KVB is the construction of the north-south light rail system , which officially began on December 4, 2002 , a new underground light rail section across downtown Cologne .

Together with its sister company HGK , KVB prepared an offer for the tender for the RB 26 “Rhineland-Bahn” (Cologne - Bonn - Koblenz) in 2005 , but this was not submitted due to unresolved public procurement issues. At the same time it was announced that the company would participate in future tenders in regional rail transport. For the tender for the RE 9 “Rhein-Sieg-Express” (Aachen - Cologne - Siegen (- Gießen)) the wholly owned subsidiary Westigo GmbH was founded as a railway company in 2006 .

While the construction of the north-south light rail system is still going on, the work begun in March 2010 to extend line 5 to the Ossendorf industrial park on the site of the former Butzweilerhof was completed in December 2010. With the timetable change on December 12, 2010, the new stops “Alter Flughafen Butzweilerhof”, “IKEA Am Butzweilerhof” and the new terminus “Sparkasse Am Butzweilerhof” were put into operation. Before the expansion, the “Am Butzweilerhof” industrial park could only be reached by bus. The cost of the above-ground route, estimated at 18 million euros, was financed by the KVB without state or federal subsidies; instead, local companies took over 5 million euros.

Lines

The light rail lines have the number range 1 to 18, the bus routes the number range 120 to 196. The numbers 101 to 118 are only used for buses that run as replacement traffic on light rail routes due to track closures, and which are not a regular bus route acts. Bus route 106 is an exception: since the south branch of the former tram line 6 was shut down as part of the construction of the north-south tram, the 106 has served as a permanent replacement rail service on the route with a connection to Heumarkt .

The bus line numbers can be roughly classified into the following groups, although not all lines fit into this scheme (for example lines 136 or 139): Lines with the numbers 120 and higher operate in the borough of Chorweiler, lines with the numbers 130 and higher run in the city district Rodenkirchen, lines with the numbers 140 and higher operate in the districts of Ehrenfeld, Lindenthal and Nippes, lines with the numbers 150 and higher operate in the districts of Mülheim and Kalk, lines with the numbers 160 and higher operate in the district of Porz, lines with the numbers 170 and higher are lines to complement the rail traffic and operate only in rush hour, lines with the numbers 180 and higher are Anrufsammeltaxi lines or taxi bus lines and lines from number 190 are assigned individually.

Light rail

Since the mid-1970s, the long-standing Duewag articulated tram cars (GT 8) have been increasingly replaced by a total of 172 B light rail cars in order to use suitable vehicles for the upcoming light rail network. The last trip of the GT 8 took place on July 22nd, 2006 as part of a farewell party, since then it has been on view in the Thielenbruch Tram Museum . Since it became apparent that a complete conversion of the network to elevated platforms was not feasible in the medium term, a total of 124 K4000 low-floor city rail cars were purchased from 1995  . In 2002 and 2003, 59 Bombardier high-floor K5000 cars were added to the fleet , and a further 15 cars followed in 2011. An additional series of 69 Bombardier K4500 low-floor light rail cars were delivered from 2005 to 2007.

KVB covers around two thirds of the bus services itself, and one third is taken over by the subcontractors Schilling Omnibusverkehr GmbH , e-weinzierl Omnibustouristik GmbH and Piccolonia Bus-Reisen Klein KG for KVB, the former being the largest subcontractor and a 51 percent subsidiary in part of KVB buses rents.

Neoplan - City bus - N4014NF (2nd series) of the KVB, built in 1992 - in use by the KVB until 2007

In the past, a large number of other makes of buses were also part of the KVB fleet. In the 1950s and 1960s, vehicles from the manufacturer Büssing and until the 1980s the Magirus-Deutz buses, which were equipped with air-cooled diesel engines from the local Deutz group, were of particular importance . Between 1983 and 2007, various types of the bus manufacturer Neoplan were also in large numbers in KVB's inventory, afterwards only buses from the manufacturers Mercedes-Benz and MAN. While about ten years ago the Citaro buses from Mercedes-Benz made up the largest proportion of the vehicle fleet, the Lion's City from MAN now dominates . In 2014, three different vehicles from the manufacturer VDL were added to the fleet for testing, one of which was a lightweight version with correspondingly lower fuel consumption.

At the end of 2015, KVB received the first of eight fully electric articulated buses of the VDL Citea SLFA Electric type . The seven remaining vehicles were handed over to KVB at the beginning of 2016. The eight e-buses cost a total of around 5.6 million euros. On December 3, 2016, operations on route 133 were completely switched to battery buses. This was preceded by a ten-month test phase with more than 35,000 kilometers.

North-South light rail

The currently largest project of the KVB is the construction of the north-south light rail to expand the Cologne light rail with a tunnel route under the old and south part of Cologne . The project management of what is currently the largest urban development project in Germany lies with the Office for Bridges and Light Rail Construction of the City of Cologne. Commissioning was originally planned for 2010, but had to be postponed again and again. Due to the collapse of the historical archive on March 3, 2009, which was located directly next to the shaft for the underground construction in Severinstraße , it will not be fully operational until 2025 at the earliest. In December 2012 the section between the cathedral / main train station and the town hall was put into operation, in December 2013 the extension to Heumarkt and in December 2015 the section from Severinstraße to Bonner Wall with four stops. Total damage of more than a billion euros must be expected. Two residents were killed in the accident and many others were left homeless. On March 8, 2010, the construction law specialist Gero Walter, commissioned by the KVB, confessed to errors in the building supervision on the Waidmarkt, directly at the collapse site of the archive, for the first time after revelations about fraud (including possible theft of iron hangers and forged building logs). The installation of iron stirrups and numerous concreting protocols were not adequately checked. As a consequence, the KVB supervisory board separated from the technical director Walter Reinarz , who was responsible for the underground construction.

Tariff

VRS short-haul ticket

The tariff of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) applies in the network of Cologne transport companies . In 2004 the tariff system was supposed to become simpler and more customer-friendly under the motto “One City, One Price”. The ticket sales of the KVB are organized via vending machines in the vehicles and partly at tram stops, in customer centers and own sales outlets, private sales outlets (e.g. kiosks) as well as via major customer sales (e.g. for student or job tickets). The customer loyalty of the KVB is great, more than 250,000 passengers are regular customers with time tickets.

In recent years, innovative forms of distribution have been added, such as VRS ticket purchases over the Internet and the “ HandyTicket ” based on the Bonn-based “Händy-Ticket”. A ticket for a single journey within the city limits is sent via SMS to the passenger's mobile phone. Alternatively, the mobile phone ticket system can also be used via smartphone apps for Android and iOS. At the beginning of 2019, the HandyTicket system was exchanged for the KVB app , which now also allows new payment options such as PayPal. As an incentive for use, a 10 percent discount applies to single tickets via HandyApp.

The fare dodger quota was 2% in 2017 and 2018, in 2013 it was 3.28% and in 2012 it was 3.78%.

KVB bike

KVB bikes at Neumarkt in Cologne

On May 8, 2015, the Cologne transporting enterprises have joined with its partner nextbike the Leihradangebot KVB wheel started. In the urban area on the left bank of the Rhine within the military ring and on the right bank of the Rhine from Höhenhaus via Höhenberg to Poll, 1460 bicycles and ten pedelecs (electric bicycles) are available; they can be borrowed from the roadside and returned in the business area. Subscription customers and students can use 30 minutes per trip free of charge.
From 2020, the KVB-Rad is to be extended to the entire city area. The number of bicycles is to be massively increased to 3000 and 300 pedelecs. The rental bikes can also be rented via the KVB app .
