Over 200 meters could be assumed from a hardly endangered favorite position for Usain Bolt. At this distance, too, the American Justin Gatlin was primarily assessed as his fiercest competitor.
Bolt no longer had the formidable form of years gone by when he was able to run times under 20.30 seconds. But even with his win time of 20.55 s at these world championships, he won the race by a clear margin. Just two tenths of a second behind him, Gatlin became vice world champion. So there was the same ranking on the first two places as over 100 meters . The South African Anaso Jobodwana surprisingly took third place and set a new national record with his 19.87 s. The fourth-placed Jason Edward from Panama just missed a medal by a very thin margin, he crossed the finish line at the same time as Jobodwana. These four sprinters undercut the 20-second mark. The Briton Zharnel Hughes was the best European in this final as fifth. Ramil Guliyev from Turkey was sixth ahead of Femi Ogunode from Qatar and the Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade.
