Neighboring towns are Slatina in the north, Chotěšov in the northeast, Radovesice in the east, Kostelec nad Ohří in the southeast, Poplze and Radlovka in the south, Evaň in the southwest, Dubany in the west and Klapý in the northwest.

history

The Libochovice area was mentioned in 1272 as the property of the Teplá Monastery . At the end of the 13th century, Hynko von Žleby and Lichtenburg acquired the area and had Klep Castle built. In 1314 Johann von Luxemburg acquired the rule from his son Hynkos. The place must have existed at this time, because in 1282 a noble family of Lubochowicz was mentioned. In 1336, Johann von Luxemburg sold Klep Castle, including the village and the Libochovice fortress, as well as the villages of Klepy , Lhotu, Radovesice and Poplze, to Zbyněk Zajíc from Waldeck on Žebrák .

During the Hussite Wars , the Zajíc von Hasenburg fought on the side of the Catholics and in 1424 the Hussites under Jan Žižka moved from Louny to Libochovice and burned the place down. After the capture, the Hussites burned four Catholic clergymen and two other defenders of Libochovice in front of the town hall. Jan III In 1507, Zajíc von Hasenburg obtained the privilege of holding a fair and weekly market from Vladislav II for Libochovice. After his death, the rule of Hasenburg was divided in 1553. In 1558 Kryštof Zajíc and in 1564 his brother Jiří sold their shares to John the Elder of Lobkowitz . With that the rule of Hasenburg expired.

John the Elder Popel von Lobkowicz formed the Libochovice estate, which consisted of the market town Libochovice and the inherited villages Dubany, Horka , Klapý, Křesín , Levousy (German: Libusch ), Lkáň , Poplze, Radovesice, Sedlec , Třtěno and Vojnice . On August 7, 1560 Ferdinand I. elevated Libochovice to the city.

Johann the Elder had the old fortress demolished and a Renaissance castle built between 1560 and 1564. After Johann's death in 1590 his son Georg inherited the rule. In 1591 he granted the city further privileges such as brewing rights. In 1594 he was arrested as the leader of a conspiracy against Rudolf II and was imprisoned in Loket Castle until his death in 1613 . The fortune of Georg Popel von Lobkowicz was confiscated. In 1606 Sigismund Báthory acquired the rule and in 1610 Adam von Sternberg received it . Wenzel Vojtech von Sternberg sold it to Gundakar von Dietrichstein in 1676 . From 1683 onwards, Antonio della Porta had the palace redesigned and expanded in baroque style. From 1685 Jan Tulipán designed the French park in which an orangery was created. In 1847 a sugar factory was built.

After the relinquishment of patrimonial Libochovice became the seat of a district court in 1850. After the male line of the Dietrichstein family had died out, the Counts of Herberstein inherited the castle in 1858 , which was expropriated from the property of Friedrich Graf von Herberstein in 1945.

In 1882 the railway connection from Lovosice to Libochovice was established and in 1902 the line from Libochovice to Louny. In 1893 a new iron bridge was built over the Eger. In 1907 the railway to Jenišovice u Jablonce nad Nisou was built , which was later continued to Vraňany . In 1910 the city had 2280 inhabitants and in 1912 a glass factory and a ring brick factory were founded. The workers in the mostly Czech-speaking town began to organize and fight for their working conditions. From 1939 to 1945 Libochowitz belonged to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , the Jewish minority and Czech intellectuals were persecuted. In May 1945 Libochovice returned to Czechoslovakia . In 1949 the district court was moved to Lovosice.
