List of bridges in Denmark
The ten longest bridges in Denmark |
The list of bridges in Denmark includes large and important road and rail bridges that are located in the actual national territory of Denmark . Bridges in the autonomous regions of Faroe Islands and Greenland are not listed.
It was not until the end of the 19th century that bridge building became more important in the country. Previously, long-distance transport was mainly carried out by sea. In the course of three epochs, the art of bridge construction in Denmark reached world-class level, including three of the longest, combined road and rail bridges in Europe: the 3199 m long Storstrømsbroen from 1937, the western part of the Storebæltsbroen from 1998 with a length of 6611 m and the 7845 m long Oresund Bridge from 2000.
History of bridge building in Denmark
Probably the oldest bridge system with supraregional importance for traffic, the over 1000 year old bridge over the Ravning Enge near Vejle , dates from the Viking Age and served as an access road to the royal seat of Jelling in Jutland . Evidence of another early bridge construction was found at Sjellebro in Djursland . References to former bridges can also be found on rune stones . In the Middle Ages, almost all bridges were made of wood, but none of them survived. The construction and maintenance of the wooden bridges built by the end of the 18th century required less specialist knowledge than B. Bridges made of granite stone.
In 1844, the Frederiksbroen in Odense, the first cast iron bridge, was completed. With the opening of the first railway line between Copenhagen and Roskilde in 1847, the age of the railways began, in which iron bridges prevailed and the state company Danske Statsbaner asserted itself as the leading institution for the construction of bridges in Denmark. Some examples are the railway bridges at Nykøbing Falster over Guldborgsund (1875), at Aalborg over Limfjord (1879) and at Vordingborg over Masnedsund (1883).
The first bridges over fairways were pontoon bridges that could be opened for shipping via a swinging part, such as over the Als Sund in 1856 (forerunner of Kong Christian den X's Bro ), the Limfjord in 1865 (forerunner of today's Limfjordsbroen ) and over the Roskilde Fjord 1868 (forerunner of the Crown Prince Frederiks Bro ).
First epoch
While the construction of all major railway bridges was initially carried out by foreign companies in the 19th century, Agger Skovgaard Ostenfeld later founded the science of bridge construction in Denmark by imparting knowledge about statics and elasticity. An era followed in which, from the mid-1920s, a number of larger bridges were built at heavily frequented ferry stations, thus bringing together larger parts of the country. Due to the economic crisis, they were mainly financed by foreign loans; The Danish state, as the client, tried to stimulate the economy with the bridge construction projects. These include Denmark's first large bridge, Lillebæltsbroen from 1935, Storstrømsbroen from 1937, at that time one of the longest bridges in Europe with a length of around 3.2 km, and the Oddesundbroen from 1938. The only large bridges built during the Second World War and the post-war period are Aggersundbroen from 1942 and the Dronning Alexandrines Bro from 1943, which has since been considered “Denmark's most beautiful bridge”. Most of the projects bore the signature of Anker Engelund , a student of bridge building pioneer Agger Skovgaard Ostenfeld.
Local interest groups advertised the projects, but they also called opponents on the scene and divided the local population into two camps. One example in which the opponents prevailed was the plan to build a bridge to Fanø - in stark contrast to their southern neighbor on Rømø , whose Rømødæmningen was completed in 1948.
Second epoch
In the second epoch from the beginning of the 1950s, unfinished plans from the interwar period were resumed, further developed and implemented, above all road bridges over the sounds and fjords. The authorities were the clients , the projects were financed by the Vejfonden Foundation . The first bridge after the standstill in the 1940s was the Munkholmbroen over the Isefjord from 1952, followed by the completion of the six-lane Langebro in Copenhagen in 1954 . Typical examples from this period also include Siødæmningen and Siøsundbroen (1960), Langelandsbroen (1962), Svendborgsundbroen (1966) and Egernsundbroen (1968).
Third epoch
From the mid-1960s, a period began in which the construction of new motorway bridges was pushed. Due to the increased volume of traffic, it was necessary to add or replace the bridges from the 1930s with new ones. Examples of this era are the motorway bridges Ny Lillebæltsbro (1970), Vejlefjordbroen (1980) and Farøbroerne (1984) and the four-lane road bridges Hadsundbroen (1976) and Alssundbroen (1981). Limfjordtunnelen (1969) and Guldborgsundtunnelen (1988) are examples in which a tunnel solution was chosen.
With the crossing of the Great Belt , to which the Storebælttunnelen and Storebæltsbroen belong, the gap between the west of Denmark (with Jutland and Funen ) and the east of the country (with Zealand and the capital Copenhagen) was closed. The opening of the Øresund Bridge between Copenhagen and Malmö / Sweden in July 2000 marked the provisional end of the third major bridge construction phase, which, although not in number, exceeded the other two phases in volume.
When planning a fixed Fehmarnbelt link between Lolland and Fehmarn , which would shorten the detour of the Jutland line via the Vogelfluglinie , the tunnel solution prevailed. The subject of frequent discussions is also a direct connection between Zealand and Jutland via Samsø and the Kattegat (Kattegat-forbindelsen) , which has not yet taken a concrete form, however, also for financial reasons.
