List of major district towns in Saxony
The major district towns in Saxony are district towns within the Free State that have a special municipal legal status.
Overview
There are 52 large district towns in the Free State of Saxony . The large district towns were given their special status, which includes certain additional responsibilities compared to the other municipalities belonging to the district, through conferment by the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior .
There are several reasons why Saxony can be awarded the title of Large District Town. On the one hand, it can be related to a territorial reform . Thus, independent cities were downgraded by law by incorporation into a district to large district towns belonging to the district. Furthermore, district towns can be declared large district towns by being incorporated into another district, provided that they lose the seat of the district office ( district seat ) upon integration . On the other hand, a municipality in Saxony can apply to the state government for the status of large district town and ultimately obtain it if it has more than 17,500 inhabitants and can properly perform the tasks associated with the status with its productivity and administrative capacity. If the population drops below this limit after the award, the city still retains the status of a major district town. Until 2008, a population of 20,000 was the minimum limit.
The awards increased particularly in connection with the two district reforms of 1994/1996 and 2008 . Since 2009, all district towns in Saxony (seat of the district office) have also been major district towns. In addition, all Saxon cities with more than 17,500 inhabitants (with the exception of the independent cities of Dresden , Leipzig and Chemnitz ) have the status of a large district town. 31 cities have the status due to the loss of the district seat, four cities as former independent cities and 17 cities because they have more than 17,500 inhabitants (up to 2008: more than 20,000 inhabitants). Only two former district towns in Saxony are not large district towns: Rothenburg / Oberlausitz , which had already lost its district seat in 1945, and Hainichen . About half of the large district towns in Saxony (28 of 52) are small towns with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. The other 24 major district towns are medium- sized towns , three of which are large medium-sized towns with more than 50,000 inhabitants (Zwickau, Plauen and Görlitz).
