from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most dominant four-thousand-meter peaks in the Alps with the highest Schartenhöhe (1–10 included according to dominance, 11–12 selected according to Schartenhöhe):
1  Mont Blanc , 2  Piz Bernina , 3  Barre des Écrins , 4  Dufourspitze , 5  Finsteraarhorn , 6  Gran Paradiso , 7  Grand Combin , 8  Dom , 9  Matterhorn , 10  Aletschhorn , 11  Weisshorn , 12  Weissmies

This list of the four-thousand-meter peaks in the Alps contains all 82 independent Alps , defined by the alpinism association UIAA - peaks over 4000 meters high. With the exception of Piz Bernina , they are located in the Western Alps and on the territory of France , Italy and Switzerland .

Another 46 elevations over 4000 meters are to be classified as secondary peaks. Together with the secondary peaks, you come to 128 four-thousand-meter peaks.

Legend

  • Rank: Rank that the summit occupies among the four-thousanders
  • Image: Image of the mountain
  • Summit: name of the summit
  • Height: Height of the mountain in meters
  • Mountains: mountain group in which the mountain lies. There is no division of the Eastern Alps, which is why a uniform allocation is not possible.
  • Country: Indicates the nationality of the summit
  • Dominance: The dominance describes the radius of the area that the mountain towers above, given in kilometers with reference point.
  • Schartenhöhe: The notch height is the difference in height between the summit height and the highest crest down to which you have to descend at least to reach a higher peak. Specified in meters with reference point.
  • First ascent: names of the first ascent with date; an empty field means that the first person to climb or the date can no longer be traced.

There is some information that is not universally agreed. Especially at border peaks, height information can differ a few meters.

Definition and criteria

The Alpine clubs Club Alpin Français , Club Alpino Italiano and Swiss Alpine Club participated in the definition . Summits as elevations with a height difference from the surface on which they are located were examined according to three main criteria: topography , morphology and alpinism . A notch height of 30 meters was determined as an average value for the topography, which was to be assumed as the limit value. This value indicates how far one must at least descend from the summit in order to reach a higher summit. For smaller elevations, the notch height of which is to be classified as borderline or too low, it is checked to what extent their overall structure and their appearance allow classification as an independent peak. As a mountaineering association, the commission also subjected the summits in question to an examination according to mountaineering criteria, such as the significance of the survey for mountaineering or an important history.

All peaks with a notch height of more than 30 meters were included in the list. Some peaks that do not pass the topographical criterion have also been included.

  • The Mont Blanc de Courmayeur was recorded despite the smaller notch height because it is 600 meters as the crow flies from Mont Blanc and appears to be both morphologically and alpinistically significant.
  • The same applies to the Grand Pilier d'Angle , which rises from the shoulder of Mont Blanc de Courmayeur.
  • Of the Aiguilles du Diable and Grandes Jorasses , all peaks over 4000 meters were recorded because they play a major role in alpinism and are morphologically distinct as peaks.
  • All five peaks from the Breithorn were recorded because their notch height is sufficient and they are also far enough apart to be considered independent.

In addition to the peaks listed above, there are another 46 surveys that do not meet the criteria and are to be classified as minor peaks. They have been added to an expanded list by the UIAA .

Remarks

  1. The height above the rock is 4,792m, but the actual height of the summit varies by 15 to 20m due to the ice and snow. The last measurement in 2013 showed 4810.02 m [1]
  2. The affiliation is controversial. While France attributes the highest point to its national territory alone, Italy is of the opinion that the border runs over the summit. See border on Mont Blanc .
  3. Refers to Elbrus , the next higher mountain that can be reached by descending to this altitude (108 meters above sea level).
  4. Assumptions, however, assume that the summit was reached in 1854 or earlier in 1855 by James Ramsay accompanied by mountain guides.
