Loh is one of the smallest and youngest suburbs of the city of Dortmund . In contrast to many other suburbs of Dortmund, it was not an independent municipality . Loh was settled late, was originally part of Benninghofen and belongs to the Hörde district of Dortmund .
Meaning of the name
"Loh" used to refer to a high-lying, widely visible wood . For the Germanic peoples these "tears" were holy groves and sacrificial sites.
Geographical location
Loh is located in the southeast of Dortmund between Benninghofen in the north and Höchst in the south, between Wellinghofen in the west and Berghofen in the east. The Lohbach forms a natural boundary , which joins the Marksbach to form the Hörder Bach , which flows into the Emscher .
history
At the beginning of the 19th century, the area known today as Loh was unpopulated and densely forested, hence the name Loh. In the report on mining in the Hörde office from 1755, the small mine is named "Schürft im Lohe". Certainly there were mining tunnels in the Loh much earlier . In 1827 the Wintersche Hof was built as the first house in the Loh. At that time the area belonged to the Wellinghofen Office . In 1850, when the Elisabeth colliery was founded, coal mining became more important.
It was not until after the First World War that the Eigenheim settlement, which was built in self-help, began to develop more densely.
The Hörder pastor August Schulte-Sodingen (pastor from 1913 to 1920 of the Evangelical parish of Hörde) did a great job of establishing this settlement . A plaque with the date February 25, 1920 reminds us that it is on Schulte-Sodingen-Strasse, north of the Eigenheimweg intersection.

Streets in town
Another border is the Niederhofer Kohlenweg , which also separates Loh from the forest that still exists today, the Niederhofer Holz. From here you have a wonderful, wide view over the settlement to the former Phoenix steelworks . Combines the Benninghofer road Hoerde with Wittbräucker road is the main artery of Loh and partly one with sycamore -lined avenue .
The aforementioned Schulte-Sodingen-Strasse reflects the conditions at the time it was built. It is a narrow paved path with no sidewalks (until a few years ago with an above-ground telephone line and power supply on wooden poles) and only permitted for local traffic. Like the parallel Benninghofer Straße, it rises steeply in the direction of Höchst.
Infrastructure
There are three bus stops in town, which are on Benninghofer Straße and some of them have a bus shelter with seats. The most frequented one is the “Benninghofer Heide” stop, in the vicinity of which there is also a mailbox and an information box for the Catholic St. Benno community in Benninghofen. During the day, the buses run every 10 minutes and reach Hörde train station in seven to eight minutes with numerous connections to Dortmund city center, the main train station and the airport. The closest underground station, Clarenberg, is about a 20-minute walk away.
A petrol station is the only shop in Loh, but the shops for daily needs in Benninghofen and on the Höchst are within walking distance.
The only public building in Loh is the former primary school Dortmund-Loh, which was set up as a municipal Catholic elementary school around the same time as the Eigenheim settlement . The single primary school was closed for the 2012/2013 school year after there had been no first class since the beginning of the 2009/2010 school year. The Höchst primary school, which has been temporarily relocated due to a new building, is currently located in the building. During elections, the building serves as a polling station for the citizens of Loh who are entitled to vote .
