Mureck (Slov. Cmurek ) is a municipality in the district of Südoststeiermark in the state of Styria in Austria with 3521 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). It is located in the judicial district of Feldbach . On January 1, 2015, the former municipalities of Eichfeld and Gosdorf were incorporated into the municipality as part of the structural reform in Styria .
The incorporation of the neighboring communities Eichfeld and Gosdorf near the community of Mureck was based on a resolution of the community council of June 27, 2013. The new community continues to bear the name "Stadtgemeinde Mureck".
On June 10, 2018, a referendum took place about the desire to move to the neighboring Leibnitz district, in which 78.8 percent of Mureckers voted for a move to Leibnitz.

Geographical location
Mureck is located in the south of Styria on the Slovenian border. The Mur floodplains with almost untouched nature are in the immediate vicinity of the city.

On June 1, 1975, the community was given the designation "Stadtgemeinde".

Culture and sights
Buildings
- Parish church hl. Bartholomäus : data going back to the year 1187; During renovation work in the spring of 1998, however, the remains of an 11th century Romanesque church built. Around 1500 construction of a Gothic church. Destruction by the Turks (1532) and by fires in 1756 and 1768. The current church building dates back to a baroque building from 1780. The parish church has a cemetery with the mausoleum of Maria Karolina of Naples-Sicily (1798–1870) (see literature)
- City Hall Mureck: The City Hall is Mureck's landmark and, in contrast to the other buildings, has three floors and a six-story tower.
- Town hall bell: The town hall has a baroque bell from 1737, which is of great historical interest. The bell has reliefs of saints, a coat of arms medallion and an inscription that refers to the manufacture. It is a rare and completely preserved bell from the Baroque period.
- Marian column: In 1665 the citizens of the city erected a statue of the Virgin Mary on the square in front of the town hall (until 1938 facing east) due to a plague pledge. The sculpture of St. Mary with the child is from this time. Around 1740 the decorated obelisk and sculptures of the patron saints Florian (fire) and Donatus (weather) were added.

- Auerlebnisweg Mureck: The Auerlebnisweg leads through the Mureck floodplains, which are the second largest floodplain forest area in Austria. The Grenzmurauen offer natural flood protection, are an important groundwater reservoir and are home to a variety of rare plants and animals.

Regular events
- Entry of Saint Nicholas with his entourage: Every year since 1977, Nicholas and his sinister entourage have moved into the town of Mureck. 16 masks carved out of wood, which have been made one by one over the past few years, create a "hell of a spectacle" in front of the Mureck town hall.
- Wake-up call: The Mureck border costume band has been waking up the early morning hours for May 1st since 1954. Until 1964 you were out on foot and then switched to a truck.
- New Year's wish concert : Since 2006 the Grenzlandtrachtenkapelle Mureck has been organizing a concert in the cultural center in Mureck at the beginning of January, at which modern music is performed in addition to typical brass band songs.

Economy and Infrastructure

Mureck is on the Radkersburger Bahn , today part of the Styrian S-Bahn . From Mureck train station you can reach Spielfeld-Straß in about 15 minutes , where there is a connection to international rail traffic with InterCity and EuroCity trains. Trains to Graz run every one to two hours from Mureck, usually with a change in Spielfeld-Straß. The journey to Graz currently takes around 50 to 70 minutes.
Mureck is located on the Südsteirische Grenzstraße B 69. In Spielfeld, around twelve kilometers from the center of Mureck, there is a connection to the Pyhrn Autobahn A 9.
In Mureck there is a connection to Slovenia via a road bridge .

mayor
Mayor is Anton Vukan from the SPÖ . He succeeds Waltraud Sudy (ÖVP), who headed the city as mayor until December 31, 2014 and then headed the business as government commissioner.
The community board also included the vice mayor Franz Neubauer (SPÖ), the second vice mayor Klaus Strein (ÖVP), the community treasurer Josef Kaufmann (SPÖ) and the board member is Josef Krenn (ÖVP).
After the municipal council elections in 2020 , Klaus Strein (BL) and Gerda Minauf (ÖVP) were elected vice mayors.

The municipality's coat of arms was awarded on February 14, 1567 by Archduke Charles II of Inner Austria.

Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1st, 2015. The re-award took place with effect from January 10, 2016.
The new blazon (description of the coat of arms) reads:
- "In a red shield over a silver, blue-flooded shield base bordered by two green lines on the side, a silver square and seven-fold tinned arch bridge with a central pillar, on each side of the bridge a silver square and five-fold tinned round tower with a black perforated round arched gate facing the center of the shield silver portcullis. "
