qualification

Qualification criteria

Twelve teams with 16 athletes each will take part in the competitions for women and men, for a total of 384 athletes. Eight of the twelve quota places per gender were awarded at continental championships and tournaments. The two best teams from Europe for women and the three best teams for men qualified, the two best teams for women and the best team from Asia for men and, equally for women and men, the two best teams from Oceania and the best Team from Africa and America . Great Britain automatically qualified to host. If Great Britain placed itself on a qualifying rank at the European Championship, the next team receives the quota place.

Finally, in 2012 three international qualification tournaments with six teams each were held for women and men. The respective winner qualified for the Olympic tournament.

Overview of all qualification competitions:

Men

Women

At the Asian Games, Pakistan secured their participation for the men and China and South Korea for the women, while the German and Dutch teams qualified for the European Championships, and Belgium for the men. As expected, Australia and New Zealand each came from Oceania, and finally Argentina won the Pan American Games and the US team surprisingly won the women’s participation.

At the African qualification tournament in Bulawayo , the South African team qualified for women and men. However, the starting places were given back later because the tournament was not sufficient evidence of performance for participation from the perspective of the South African Association. Instead, the women's team started at the qualifying tournament in Delhi , where they finally qualified. The men's team took part in the qualification tournament in Kakamigahara and was also able to finally qualify. The quota places that became available were assigned to Argentina for women and Spain for men based on the world rankings.
