Chuvash ( Chuvash Чӑваш Ен / Cavas Jen or Чӑваш Республики / Cavas Respubliki ; Russian Чувашия / Tschuwaschija or Russian Чувашская Республика / Tschuwaschskaja Respublika ) is an autonomous republic in the European part of Russia .

geography

Chuvashia is located in the Volga Federal District in Eastern Europe. The republic is located on the upper reaches of the Volga , about 600 kilometers east of Moscow. In the north it borders on Mari El , in the east on Tatarstan , in the west on Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and in the south-west on Mordovia .

history

Chuvashia belonged to the Kazan Khanate before it fell to Russia in the mid-16th century . In contrast to other Turkic peoples, the Chuvashes were Christianized in the 18th century . Chuvashia was an Autonomous Socialist Soviet Republic (ASSR) during the Soviet Union . In 1991 it became a republic within Russia.

population

The small republic is one of the most densely populated republics in Russia. The Chuvash , a Turkic people , make up the majority of the population. The Russians , Tatars and Mordvins are significant minorities ; smaller minorities the Ukrainians and Mari .

The official languages ​​are Chuvash and Russian . The majority of the population (including the Chuvash) profess to the Russian Orthodox Church , a minority to Islam .

politics

On July 28, 2010, Mikhail Vasilyevich Ignatiev was elected President of the Autonomous Republic by the State Council of Chuvashia on the proposal of Dmitri Medvedev . Ignatiev was previously Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Agriculture of Chuvashia. From January 1, 2012 he carried the title of head of the republic. On June 9, 2015 , Vladimir Putin dismissed Ignatiev at his own request and appointed him interim head of the Chuvash Republic.

Chuvashia is considered one of the richer republics of Russia. Mechanical engineering , light industry , wood and food industry are among the most important branches of industry.

Administrative divisions and cities

The Chuvash Republic is divided into 21 Rajons and 5 urban districts .

The capital is Cheboksary , the second largest city is its satellite city Novocheboksarsk . These two and the next largest cities Kanasch , Alatyr and Schumerlja form the five city districts. There are a total of nine cities in the republic.
