Silver Bear / Best Actress
The Silver Bear for the best actress honors the best acting performance of a leading or supporting actress in a competition film (feature film) at the annual Berlin Film Festival . The award was first presented at the sixth edition of the film festival in 1956 . The competition jury, which is mostly composed of international filmmakers, votes on the award of the prize.
As of 2021, the awards for the best actor and the best actress are to be discontinued, instead awards for the best acting in a leading role and the best acting in a supporting role are to be awarded. The ProQuote Film association criticized the gender-neutral prizes as a fig leaf for innovation , saying that the Berlinale is far from gender equality . Much more films by men than by women were shown in the festival's competition.
Award winners
American film actresses (13 victories) were most frequently awarded the actor's prize, followed by their colleagues from Germany (FRG and GDR: 11) as well as France and the United Kingdom (8 each). So far, only the American Shirley MacLaine (1959 and 1971) has triumphed twice . In 2009, Birgit Minichmayr ( All Others ) was the first Austrian actress to be successful.
