history

The typical Rhine-Hessian wine village was called Weiler Megelsheim in the Middle Ages and was first mentioned in a document in 1220. In 1234 Megelsheim came together with Sprendlingen from the Raugrafen to the county of Sponheim-Kreuznach . The lower part of the municipal coat of arms, chessboard blue-gold, dates from this period . In 1417 the County of Sponheim-Starkenburg inherited 4/5 of the County of Sponheim-Kreuznach, including the local rule over Megelsheim. In 1437 Johann V , the last Count of Sponheim-Starkenburg, inherited the local rule to a condominium owned by the Margrave of Baden and the Count of Veldenz . In 1444 Pfalz-Simmern-Zweibrücken inherits the county of Veldenz. In 1459 the house was divided into Pfalz-Zweibrücken and Pfalz-Simmern , to which St. Johann was added and which in 1559 inherited the Electoral Palatinate . In 1707 the condominium from Baden and now Kurpfalz in the area of the former County of Sponheim-Kreuznach is dissolved. After the death of Margrave Ludwig Wilhelm , Sprendlingen was owned by Baden and formed a margravial Baden office to which St. Johann was assigned. The place stayed with Baden until the end of the 18th century.

From 1912 to 1953, Sankt Johann was the terminus of the narrow-gauge overland tram Bad Kreuznach – St. Johann . Omnibuses then replaced their traffic.

It is one of the most important sacred buildings in Rheinhessen . The church was built as a pilgrimage church in the second half of the fourteenth century by the Counts of Sponheim-Kreuznach and is located on the Rhine-Hessian way of the pilgrims of St. James . Its medieval wall paintings , which are particularly popular with art historians because of a monumental representation (6 m × 8 m) of the veneration of Christ and Mary by members of the donor family in a fantastic architectural setting based on Bohemian models, and the modern church windows by Heinz Hindorf are worth seeing . The important organ was built in 1793 by the Hesse-Darmstadt court organ builder Johann Philipp Oberndörfer for Roßdorf near Darmstadt and acquired from there in 1848.
