Thil (German: Thiel , Lorraine: Til ) is a French commune with 1,877 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ).

Neighboring communities are Hussigny-Godbrange in the north, Rédange in the north, Villerupt in the east, and Tiercelet in the south. Thil also owned a train station on the Valleroy – Villerupt railway line .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1089 as Tileis .

During the Second World War , the Thil subcamp of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp was located in Thiel . Nowadays a memorial (Crypte de Thil) commemorates the concentration camp.
