Anastassija Sergejewna Pawljutschenkova ( Russian Анастаси́я Серге́евна Павлюче́нкова , English transcription Anastasia Sergeyevna Pavlyuchenkova ; born July 3, 1991 in Samara , then Russian SFRS , Soviet Union ) is a Russian tennis player .

Career

Pavlyuchenkova was introduced to tennis at the age of six by her sporty family (the father belonged to the national top class in canoeing, the mother was a swimmer). Her grandmother was a Soviet national basketball player, her grandfather was an international referee in the same sport. She also has an older brother, Alexander Pavlyuchenkow , who is also a professional player.

Junior career: 2006 to 2008

Even as a junior, Pavlyuchenkova had great successes and in June 2006 reached the top position in the junior tennis world rankings . In 2006 she won both the Australian Open junior competition , in which she prevailed against Caroline Wozniacki in the final , and the US Open junior competition after a final victory over Tamira Paszek . The following year, she defended her title in Melbourne in the final against Madison Brengle and remained without a set loss throughout the tournament. In doubles, she is even five-time Junior Grand Slam winner. In 2006 she won at the side of Sharon Fichman at the Australian Open and the French Open , in Wimbledon she triumphed together with her compatriot Alissa Kleibanova . The following year she repeated her title in London with Urszula Radwańska . In 2008 she won again at the Australian Open with Xenija Lykina .

Early years on the WTA Tour: 2006 to 2008

In 2005 she took part in a tournament on the ITF Women's World Tennis Tour for the first time and won her first professional title in 2006. In the same year, she made her debut at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow in the main draw of a WTA tournament after receiving a wildcard from the organizers , but lost there at the start against Nicole Vaidišová . In 2007 she started in Melbourne for the first time in the qualification of a Grand Slam tournament and was eliminated in the final round. the organizers of Wimbledon awarded her a wildcard for the main round due to her success in the junior division; in the first round she could only win one game against Daniela Hantuchová .

In early 2008 Pavlyuchenkova won her first two ITF titles in the $ 25,000 category before she could book her first win in the main round of a WTA tournament in Fez against Fatima El Allami . Together with Sorana Cîrstea , against whom she was eliminated in the second round of the individual competition, she was then able to win her first WTA title in doubles. At the French Open , she then successfully qualified for the main draw for the first time, in which, after an opening success over Maria-Emilia Salerni , she immediately reached the second round, in which she was defeated by Flavia Pennetta . In Wimbledon, Pavlyuchenkova even advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time as a qualifier before she was stopped by Agnieszka Radwańska . She ended the season on the ITF Tour with two tournament wins in the $ 100,000 category in a row in Poitiers and Bratislava , ending the season in the top 50 in the world rankings for the first time.

Rise to the top of the world: 2009 to 2011

Pawljutschenkowa experienced her international breakthrough in 2009 at the Premier Mandatory tournament in Indian Wells , where she advanced to the semi-finals without losing a set, beating two top 10 players for the first time with Jelena Janković and Agnieszka Radwańska before she had to admit defeat to Ana Ivanović . Later in the year she also achieved the third round at the French Open and was again in the quarterfinals of a major tournament in Beijing towards the end of the season , in which she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova after defeating Venus Williams in the second round . 2010 Pavlyuchenkova first achieved the quarter-finals in Dubai , before they could win their first two WTA individual titles in Monterrey , after winning the final against Daniela Hantuchová, and then in Istanbul through a final victory over Jelena Wesnina . Then she advanced in Cincinnati to the semifinals, in which she had to admit defeat Marija Sharapova in three sets, and came at the US Open for the first time in the second round, which she lost to Francesca Schiavone . As a result of the successes, Pavlyuchenkova moved up to the top 20 in the ranking and qualified for the Tournament of Champions in Bali, where she was eliminated in the first round after a straight defeat against the eventual winner Ana Ivanović.

At the start of the 2011 season, she reached the semi-finals in Brisbane in singles and then won the doubles competition together with Alissa Kleibanova. Then she defended her title in Monterrey in the final against Jelena Janković and came in Madrid after a victory over Samantha Stosur in the quarter-finals, in which she failed to Julia Görges . She then advanced to the last eight at the French Open for the first time in a Grand Slam tournament and scored her biggest victory to date in the round of 16 against third-placed Wera Swonarjowa . In the quarterfinals she had to admit defeat to Francesca Schiavone again. On July 4, Pavlyuchenkova achieved her highest position in the world rankings to date with 13th place. At the US Open , she was in a Grand Slam quarter-finals for the second time, with her taking revenge against the Italian in the round of 16, before losing to Serena Williams in the following match . At the end of the season, she reached the quarter-finals again in Beijing and ended the year in the top 20 in the world for the first time.

2012 to 2015

In 2012, Pavlyuchenkova fell out of the top 30 in the ranking after a weaker year with a total of eight first-round defeats. She achieved her best individual result in Washington , where she lost in the final against Magdaléna Rybáriková without a chance. In Cincinnati she won her only Top 10 win of the year against Caroline Wozniacki and made it to the quarterfinals, which she lost to Petra Kvitová . In doubles, she was able to celebrate her first WTA double title at a tournament of the premier category at the side of Lucie Šafářová in Charleston . In the years to come, Pavlyuchenkova's performance was subject to enormous fluctuations, although between many early defeats she repeatedly attracted attention with strong individual results. At the start of the 2013 season she advanced to the final in Brisbane , after beating two top 10 players with Petra Kvitová and Angelique Kerber , but had no chance in the final against Serena Williams. It then took until April before Pavlyuchenkova won her next two individual titles in Monterrey within a month after beating Dominika Cibulková in the final , and in Oeiras after winning the final over Carla Suárez Navarro . In her third final of the year in Seoul she was defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska and came to the end of the season at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow again in the semifinals, in which she was stopped by the eventual winner Simona Halep . nevertheless she managed for the second time after 2010 the qualification for the Tournament of Champions in Sofia, in which she moved into the semifinals after two preliminary round victories over Alizé Cornet and Elina Switolina as well as a defeat against Halep, which she lost against Samantha Stosur in three sets. In doubles, she advanced to the quarter-finals at the Australian Open and French Open , each with Lucie Šafářová, and won her first double title at a tournament in the Premier Mandatory category in Madrid , also alongside the Czech. At the end of the year, Pavlyuchenkova climbed to 21st place in the WTA ranking, her highest position in the double world rankings to date.

In 2014 Pavlyuchenkova won her first WTA single title in the Premier category in Paris after three top 10 victories in a row against Angelique Kerber, Marija Sharapova and in the final against Sara Errani . This was followed by a longer period of fluctuating performances until the end of the year, where she was able to achieve individual successes against well-known opponents in Madrid against Jelena Janković or in Wuhan with Ana Ivanović. At the end of the season, after a final victory over Irina-Camelia Begu, she won her first tournament win on the WTA Tour in front of a home crowd at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow . In addition, she reached her third Grand Slam quarter-finals in doubles at Wimbledon together with Lucie Šafářová. After a weak first half of the 2015 season, Pavlyuchenkova managed to keep her shape for several weeks for the first time at the end of the year. So she first moved into the final in Washington for the second time after 2012, but lost it to Sloane Stephens . In Cincinnati and Beijing she then reached the quarter-finals, in which she was defeated by Simona Halep and Ana Ivanović, and finally won her eighth WTA individual title in Linz with a final victory over Anna-Lena Friedsam . She was also in the final of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow the following week, but was unable to defend her title there after a loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova. She also reached the quarter-finals at the US Open together with Alla Kudrjawzewa ; so she was in the last eight in all four Grand Slam tournaments in doubles.

2016 and 2017

In 2016, however, Pavlyuchenkova was initially unable to match the consistency of the previous months. Only in the middle of the year did she get back into shape when she moved into her third Grand Slam quarter-finals at Wimbledon , in which she was stopped by the eventual winner Serena Williams. Afterwards she reached the quarterfinals for the first time at the Rogers Cup in Montreal, which she lost to Madison Keys . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, she came in singles after beating Magda Linette in the second round, but lost there Mónica Puig , who later won the gold medal. After a third round at the US Open and another quarter-final in Moscow , she finished the season in the top 30 in the world for the fourth time in a row.

At the start of the 2017 season, Pavlyuchenkova and Tímea Babos won their fifth WTA double title in Sydney . She then stood at the Australian Open after the French Open and US Open 2011 and Wimbledon 2016 in her fourth Grand Slam quarter-finals, which she lost to Venus Williams. In Indian Wells she then reached the quarter-finals after she had her 25th top 10 success against Dominika Cibulková. This was followed by her fourth triumph at the tournament in Monterrey . In the final there, against Angelique Kerber, her first win against a current world number one. After the Fed Cup break, she won her tenth WTA individual title in Rabat through a final victory over Francesca Schiavone. In the second half of the season, after two first round defeats at Wimbledon and at the US Open in Tokyo, she reached her third season finale, in which she failed to Caroline Wozniacki. After beating Daria Gavrilova in the final , she won her third tournament victory of the season in Hong Kong and ended the year in the top 20 in the world rankings for the first time since 2011. Thanks to her good results, she qualified for the third time in her career for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, where she was eliminated in the group stage after defeating Angelique Kerber and losing to Ashleigh Barty .

Since 2018

In 2018 Pavlyuchenkova slipped in the world rankings again after a weaker season in which she only had two good results with winning the title in Strasbourg after a final victory over Dominika Cibulková and reaching the quarter-finals in Wuhan . In doubles, she was able to reach her fifth Grand Slam quarter-finals in doubles together with Anastasija Sevastova in New York . The following year, Pavlyuchenkova also succeeded in doing this in the individual, when she was in the round of eight for the second time after 2017 at the Australian Open and was eliminated there against Danielle Collins . Another mixed season followed, in which she was only in Osaka again in a WTA final, which she lost to Naomi Osaka . At the end of the season in Moscow she also had to admit defeat to Belinda Bencic in the final . Despite inconsistent performance, she was able to finish a season in the top 50 in the ranking for the twelfth time in a row.

At the Australian Open 2020 , she repeated her result from the previous year and, after successes over Karolína Plíšková and Angelique Kerber, moved into her fifth Grand Slam individual quarter-final, in which she was defeated by Garbiñe Muguruza .

Fed Cup

2009 was Pavlyuchenkova in the 1: 4 semi-final defeat against Italy her debut for the Russian Fed Cup team . Since then, she has contested 25 singles and doubles for her country, of which she was able to win 14 (individual balance 9: 9) and was twice in the finals. In the 2011 Fed Cup final against the team from the Czech Republic , she won her individual game against Lucie Šafářová , but Russia was beaten 3-2 by the Czechs in the end. When the two teams met again in the final of the Fed Cup 2015 , which the Czechs also won 3-2, they lost both singles to Šafářová and Karolína Plíšková and then lost in doubles at Jelena Wesnina's side, again against Plíšková and Barbora Strýcová .
