This was followed as the postseason by the final round of the eight best-placed teams for the German championship, which lasted until June 23, 2019 as a play-off series in the best-of-five mode . FC Bayern Munich started the season as the reigning champions . The team was able to defend the title with a sweep in the play-offs, so without a defeat.
General
- With SC Rasta Vechta (relegated basketball Bundesliga 2016/17 ) and HAKRO Merlins Crailsheim (relegated basketball Bundesliga 2015/16 ), two former Bundesliga clubs are returning to the German upper house. Rockets , who had been promoted from the previous year, and Tigers Tübingen , who had been part of the BBL since 2004, were relegated regularly. Once again, only one club from North Rhine-Westphalia plays in the BBL with the Telekom Baskets Bonn .
- The season 18/19 is the premiere season of the new cup mode , in which the 16 clubs that held the class in the previous year play the German cup winners. The first round will be played at the beginning of October 2018, the final on February 17, 2019.
- As in the previous season, all league games as well as the games in the new cup mode and All-Star-Day will be broadcast by Telekom Sport ( live and on-demand ).
- Again there are two international breaks . The first break starts at the end of November 2018, the second at the end of February after the cup final.
International competitions
As in the previous season , the German champion competes in the EuroLeague and three other German representatives in the EuroCup . Although Brose Bamberg would have qualified for the EuroCup, it was decided to take part in the FIBA Basketball Champions League . This link to the competition applies for the following five years, provided that the athlete is qualified. Instead, the Skyliners Frankfurt moved up into the EuroCup.
