Berlin postal districts 1920 to 1993

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of postal facilities in the Berlin Weichbild is a compilation of all post offices , postal agencies , post offices and post offices that were added to the postal districts in old Berlin that already existed in the previous century when the greater Berlin community was formed on October 1, 1920 . It ends with the introduction of the five-digit postcodes in 1993. This does not include the postal facilities in the former core area of Berlin, i.e. Mitte, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, Prenzlauer Berg, Tiergarten and Wedding.

introduction

With the Greater Berlin Act of April 27, 1920, seven surrounding cities ( Charlottenburg , Cöpenick , Berlin-Lichtenberg , Neukölln , Berlin-Schöneberg , Spandau , Berlin-Wilmersdorf ) as well as 59  rural communities and 27 manor districts were made up of the Niederbarnim , Osthavelland and Teltow incorporated into Berlin. When the Greater Berlin Association was introduced in 1912, Lichtenberg, Schöneberg and Wilmersdorf had already received the official names Berlin-Lichtenberg, Berlin-Schöneberg and Berlin-Wilmersdorf.

The postal facilities of the Reichspost in Berlin and the surrounding area belonged to the Oberpostdirektion Berlin . From 1934 it was called Reichspostdirektion. In 1945 it became again the Oberpostdirektion Berlin. After the city split, the authority in West Berlin was called Landespostdirektion Berlin from 1954 . In 1954, the Berlin District Office of Deutsche Post was established in East Berlin . In 1991 both institutions merged again to form the Berlin Post Office .

The post offices of Charlottenburg 1, Lichtenberg 1 and Pankow 1 are already included in the compilation of the Berlin postal districts between 1862 and 1920 . However, significant changes after 1920 are given in the following list.

The post offices in the Berlin metropolitan area before the creation of Greater Berlin in 1920 were numbered. It was preceded by the abbreviation of the cardinal direction (W, N, NE etc. or a C for center). The offices of the places incorporated in 1920 were given the designation "Berlin" before their previous name (Berlin-Spandau, Berlin-Köpenick, etc.). Postcodes were first introduced in Germany in 1941 . Berlin received the 1, which was put in brackets in front of the name of the city, e.g. B. (1) Berlin-Schöneberg. The numbers continued to be used after the Second World War.

In 1962, new four-digit postcodes were introduced in the western part of the city, as in the rest of Germany. Berlin received the number 1000. There was also the two-digit number of the delivery post office (e.g. 1000 Berlin 62). In the eastern part of Berlin there were postcodes since 1965. All addresses were given a four-digit postcode, with the first two numbers being 10 or 11.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the merger of the Berlin postal administrations, East Berlin addresses were given the letter "O" (for East Berlin) with a hyphen in front of the four-digit postcodes that were valid up until then. In 1993 a new system with five-digit postcodes was introduced nationwide. For financial reasons, what was then Deutsche Bundespost closed most post offices in the mid-1990s, sold the properties and worked with partner branches that offer postal services in addition to their core business.

After several subsequent conversions, it is planned to expand and convert it into a commercial center in the 21st century.

State 1993

With the introduction of the 5-digit postcode system, the Deutsche Bundespost has canceled all previously existing names of the postal facilities or numbers that referred to the historical development of Berlin.

Berlin received "1" as the first digit, the second digit ranges from "0" to "4" - without the "1" - and begins in the city center, from there to the east and counterclockwise. The numbers in third place are an arbitrary allocation, but are largely based on district boundaries. The Berlin postcodes end with the sequence "141xx".
