Location of the community Carlow in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg | ||
Carlow is a municipality in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Germany. The municipality is administered by the Rehna Office , based in the city of the same name .
geography
The municipality of Carlow lies on a loop of the river Maurine between the towns of Ratzeburg , Gadebusch , Schönberg and Rehna . The Hanseatic city of Lübeck is approx. 18 km away. The area east and west of the Maurine is slightly hilly (heights up to 59 m above sea level).
The approximately 177 hectare Röggeliner See , whose northern tip is used as a bathing lake, is located near the district of Klocksdorf . The majority of the lake, like the adjacent Kuhlrader Moor, is under nature protection because of the numerous water bird species .
Carlow is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Siemz-Niendorf in the north, Königsfeld in the east, Dechow in the south, Groß Molzahn in the south-west, Schlagsdorf in the west and Rieps in the north-west.
The districts of Klein Molzahn, Klocksdorf, Kuhlrade, Neschow, Pogez, Samkow and Stove belong to Carlow.
history
Carlow is mentioned for the first time as Karlowe in the endowment document of Heinrich the Lion dated 1158 for the diocese of Ratzeburg . However, the area was already populated in the early Stone Age. The name of the place of Karl is attributed to the Germanic Lombards , who moved south until about 550 AD. Subsequently, Slavs settled here . German colonists from Westphalia, Holstein, Holland and Franconia, among others, were settled around 1150 under Heinrich von Badewide .
A knight named Gottschalk, who later called himself Gottschalk von Karlowe , was enfeoffed with Karlowe and built a fortified castle near the Slavic settlement.
The church in Carlow is mentioned as early as 1230 in the Ratzeburg tithe register , which lists the localities that were then part of the Ratzeburg diocese, sorted by parishes . The church from the 13th century was replaced in the 19th century by a neo-Gothic tower and a neo-Gothic nave as new buildings in brick. Only the rectangular choir from the 13th century was preserved as a granite block structure with three tall narrow windows on each outside. Carlow belonged to the Principality of Ratzeburg (until the reunification of Mecklenburg-Strelitz with Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1934).
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities Klocksdorf and Samkow were incorporated

coat of arms
Blazon : "In blue a right, silver wave flank pole, accompanied by an upright, silver-armored golden bear with a silver neck ring and a drawn silver loop."
The coat of arms was designed by Alexander Jacob from Braunichswald . It was approved by the Ministry of the Interior on January 24, 2007 and registered under the number 307 of the coat of arms of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. |
|
Justification of the coat of arms: In the coat of arms, the wave flank post is intended to symbolize the landscape shaped by the Maurine as well as the affiliation of parts of the community corridor to the Schaalsee biosphere reserve. The bear, borrowed from the seals of the von Karlow family, which died out in the 16th century, is a reminder of the close connection between this family and the medieval history of Carlow. |
flag
The flag was designed by Eberhard Krenzin from Carlow and approved on August 17, 2007 by the Ministry of the Interior.
The flag is made of yellow cloth and is covered with a blue diagonal corner on the leech above and on the flight hem below, which takes up half the height and half the length of the flag cloth. In the middle of the flag is the municipal coat of arms, which takes up half the height of the flag. The relation of the height of the flag cloth to the length is like 3: 5.
Official seal
The official seal shows the municipal coat of arms with the inscription "GEMEINDE CARLOW • LANDKREIS NORDWESTMECKLENBURG".
Attractions
The last commercially operated watermill in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Stovermühle) is located in the district of Stove . The mill was first mentioned in 1377, but it could be even older. The operator is a compound feed plant.
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture defines large parts of the area around Carlow. The community, located on the Schaalsee biosphere reserve , is increasingly relying on tourism in the largely intact natural landscape with numerous lakes, meadows and forests.

The connecting roads from Rehna to Lübeck and from Schönberg to Zarrentin at the Schaalsee cross in Carlow . The connection to the federal motorway 20 is 9 km away; the neighboring town of Dechow is on the federal highway 208 from Ratzeburg to Gadebusch. The next train station is in Rehna.
