In the urban area lying Outbound Castle Bald Mountain and the deserted villages , which may be worked out in Spaichingen stone hamlet, stick rings and Niederhofen.
history
middle Ages
Spaichingen was first mentioned in a document in 791 in a deed of donation from the St. Gallen monastery . Above Spaichingen on today's Dreifaltigkeitsberg was Baldenberg Castle .
In the Middle Ages, the sovereign rights in Spaichingen were held by the Counts of Hohenberg . According to a document from 1381, Count Rudolf III. (died 1389) to Duke Leopold III. of Habsburg . Spaichingen became Austrian for over 400 years and belonged to the Upper Austrian Upper Office of Rottenburg and the Upper Bailiwick of Oberhohenberg , based in Fridingen . Because of its strategically important location, the place had to endure looting and arson with many troops marching through. The plague in 1530 also hit the place and the surrounding area hard. Nevertheless, Spaichingen was able to develop into an economic center.
Early modern age
In 1623 Spaichingen was given the right to hold a weekly market and a fair . In the course of the Thirty Years War, the number of residents shrank to under half of the pre-war level. After this immense setback, Spaichingen became the seat of the upper bailiff for Oberhohenberg from 1688. A foil spinning mill had existed on site since 1768, and a silk mill was added later. As part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , Spaichingen came to the Electorate in 1805, and from 1806 to the Kingdom of Württemberg .
Württemberg time
In 1806, the year the Kingdom of Württemberg was founded, Spaichingen became the seat of the Oberamt of the same name . Spaichingen was not officially raised to town until 1828. On July 15, 1869, when the Rottweil-Tuttlingen section of the Upper Neckar Railway opened, the Spaichingen station went into operation. The Oberamtsstadt was thus connected to the route network of the Württemberg railway .
Nazi era
Due to a comprehensive regional reform in Württemberg during the Nazi era , the city of Spaichingen became part of the new district of Tuttlingen in 1938 after the so-called Spaichingen district was dissolved in 1934 .
From the beginning of September 1944 to April 18, 1945, there was a satellite camp of the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp in Spaichingen . The Mauserwerke weapons factory from Oberndorf (Neckar) relocated part of its production to Spaichingen under the cover name "Metallwerke Spaichingen". Hundreds of women and men were deported to Germany and forced to work there, but also in textile companies and during construction work , at least 96 were killed. Since November 24, 1963, a memorial by the sculptor Roland Martin has been commemorating the victims on the Stuttgart – Hattingen-Singen railway line .
The Spaichingen concentration camp was dissolved on April 18, 1945; around 400 prisoners were driven on a ten-day march towards the Allgäu. As a witness at a trial, a former prisoner reported that only about half of the men saw the end of the march in Füssen .
post war period
In 1945 the city became part of the French zone of occupation and was thus assigned to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Hohenzollern in 1947 , which was merged into the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.
With the district reform in Baden-Württemberg , the city of Spaichingen moved as part of the district of Tuttlingen from the administrative district of Südwürttemberg-Hohenzollern to the administrative district of Freiburg .
Since the late 1970s in particular, the city has grown far beyond the old city center, which lies in the rear Primtal up to the step edge bay, and was expanded to the north and northwest with large new building districts.
On the southern edge of the industrial area with an old tradition, a large, modern industrial and commercial belt was created.

The coat of arms was awarded by Duke Sigismund in 1482 and confirmed by King Maximilian in 1490. |
"The banner is white and red striped lengthways with the coat of arms above the middle."
Town twinning
- Since 1970 there has been a partnership with the French town of Sallanches in the Haute-Savoie department near Mont Blanc. An integral part of the city partnership with Sallanches has been the annual student exchange of the Spaichingen grammar school and, for some years now, the Spaichingen secondary school with two schools in Sallanches. The Spaichingen volunteer fire brigade has also maintained an active friendship with the partner fire brigade from Sallanches for years.
- Since 1991 there have been annual student exchanges between the German grammar school in Mezöbereny ( Hungary ) and the Spaichinger grammar school.
- Since the border with the GDR was opened, there have been contacts with the Saxon city of Regis-Breitingen about 40 kilometers south of Leipzig . Regis-Breitingen used to have the same postcode as Spaichingen (7208).
Culture and sights
The municipality is affiliated with the "Donaubergland" tourist association.
Buildings
The landmark of the city is the Dreifaltigkeitsberg ( 988 m ) with the pilgrimage church of the parish, looked after by the Claretian order . (Early baroque 1673, high altar by Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer ). From the Dreifaltigkeitsberg, pioneers of gliding such as B. the Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe, Wolf Hirth and other numerous flight attempts. Flight operations later shifted to the plateau of the nearby Klippeneck , which is still a center of gliding in Germany today.
The trade museum, built in the neo-renaissance style in 1876 by the trade association and the trade bank, has housed the city museum since 1991. The magnificent ballroom in the listed building is worth seeing.
music
The Stadtkapelle Spaichingen under the direction of music director Thomas Uttenweiler is a symphonic top-level wind orchestra. Performances in Berlin, Duisburg, France and Budapest or at the friendlies between Germany and Brazil, as well as on radio and television, have made the city band known across national borders.
Regular events
A traditional event in Spaichingen is the 50s festival, here the respective year of birth of the 50-year-olds celebrates a large festival lasting several days, in which the age groups of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s anniversaries traditionally take part.
The place is also known for the spread in the Swabian-Alemannic region carnival . This includes the Carnival Sunday parade of the Deichelmaus fool's guild with many wagons and foot groups on local topics and various fools' guilds who present their fool's hate .
After the carnival, a torch relay with self-made torches is organized on the Sunday of the Spark . Most of the torches are built by the students of Spaichingen with the participation and support of the schools. The finished torches are picked up for resin and taken to the Trinity Mountain on Sunday. Before the torch-bearers hike down the mountain under the supervision of the local volunteer fire brigade, they can warm up in the pilgrim hall of the Claretine monastery on the mountain and pick up sausage, wake-up calls and a drink for free. The run leads from the top of the Dreifaltigkeitsberg about two kilometers down the serpentine road on the Albtraufes to the “Bleiche” where the bonfire is set up and the straw witch is symbolically burned. The torch bearers overcome a height difference of more than 200 m. On this day you can see four to six more fires from Spaichingen. The Spaichinger Funkenhexen, which has existed since 1992, as well as the town chapel are on site for this custom.
Every year there is a flea market on the market square in the city at the beginning of May , the Martini market at the beginning of November and the Christmas market at the beginning of December.
The international youth soccer tournament in the Unterbach stadium, which has been held every July for years by the Spaichingen 08 sports club, is also well known across the region.

In addition to the Spaichingen train station, there is also the Spaichingen-Mitte stop in the north of Spaichingen. Until 1966, Spaichingen was also the starting point of the Heubergbahn to Reichenbach am Heuberg and thus had a direct train connection to the Heuberg . However, this line has now been closed and dismantled. The former railway line has been redesigned into a cycling and hiking trail. Spaichingen is part of the TUTicket transport association .

health care
There was a first hospital in Spaichingen before the construction of the Spaichingen district hospital, which was built between 1876 and 1878 with a capacity of 18 beds in twelve rooms. A renovation in 1908 increased the capacity to 30 beds. In 1925, the Spaichingen General Assembly decided to build a new building with twice the number of beds, but this was rejected by the Württemberg Ministry of the Interior. Instead, the existing house was rebuilt and enlarged to 60 beds. The old building, no longer able to cope with the requirements of a modern hospital, was replaced in 1967 by a new building that was expanded in 1974. On January 1, 2005, the two previously independent district clinics Spaichingen and Tuttlingen were merged to form a joint clinic with two locations under the name Klinikum Landkreis Tuttlingen . Today there are clinics for general surgery and orthopedics, for plastic, aesthetic, hand and reconstructive surgery, for anesthesia and intensive care medicine, a medical clinic and an ENT clinic as a reference department at the Spaichingen Clinic.
