The Spaniard Javier Fernández defended his title from the previous year. After the short program, his training companion Yuzuru Hanyū was more than twelve points ahead. The favored Japanese made an unusually large number of mistakes in his freestyle, so Fernández was able to overtake him with the best freestyle of his career so far. The freestyle for singing by Frank Sinatra included a quadruple toe loop , a quadruple salchow- triple toeloop combination, a quadruple salchow and two triple axels . The Spaniard did not make any mistakes with his jumping elements and he received consistently positive evaluations in the execution. Even before his freestyle was over, there was standing applause from the audience. It was the first time a figure skater reached the 300-point mark at world championships . Fernández had hardly been able to train on the day of the freestyle due to a heel inflammation.
The podium was completed by Chinese champions Jin Boyang on his World Cup debut . His short program had the highest base value of all participants at 50.73. The quadruple Lutz triple toe loop combination included the element with the highest base value (17.90) of all the elements shown in the short program. The Chinese freestyle also had the clearly highest base value of all participants at 103.10. It included four quadruple jumps, more than ever before in a figure skating program. Jin stood all the jumps and thus became the first figure skater to successfully land a total of six quadruple jumps in a competition, but with unclean landings. Therefore, there were no significant pluses in the level of execution (GOE). As expected, he lost numerous points in the program components. Nevertheless, this was enough to work your way up from fifth to bronze. Boyang Jin immediately made it onto the podium at his first World Cup. It was the first medal for a Chinese in the men's competition at the world figure skating championships .
With the Russian runner-up Mikhail Koljada , another World Cup debutant took a leading place. He showed the second cleanest freestyle of the last group and thus secured fourth place. Koljada set personal best points in the short program, freestyle and overall performance and, with his strong debut, questioned the ranking of the Russian figure skaters, as the Russian master Maxim Kowtun could once again not meet the high expectations and with a desolate freestyle performance in the end only the 18th. Took place.
The comeback of the three-time world champion Patrick Chan after a year off did not go as planned in the end. After the short program, the Canadian was still in third place. In the freestyle, however, he was unable to repeat his splendid performance that he had shown at the Four Continents Championships. As the last starter, he made numerous mistakes so that he had to be content with fifth place in the end. The Japanese runner-up Shōma Uno completed the last starting group in the freestyle. After the short program he was in fourth place and thus in a promising position. In the freestyle, however, he suffered a serious fall. In the end it was enough for him to finish seventh.
The three Americans showed a strong collective performance in front of their home crowd. In the free skate, both the US champion was Adam Rippon , and the sudden massive Max Aaron and the third for the injured US Championships Nathan Chen Incoming Grant Hochstein convincing. Adam Rippon tried the fourfold Lutz ; however, this was devalued to him as undervalued. Nevertheless, the noticeably matured Rippon showed a relaxed and rousing freestyle, which was received with cheers from the audience at the end. In the end it was enough for him to finish sixth. Max Aaron, who has come from ice hockey, succeeded in his quadruple salchow triple toeloop combination and his quadruple salchow as a single jump. The audience celebrated the success of the jumps frenetically. Aaron took seventh place with this performance. Grant Hochstein's performance also exceeded all expectations. He stood a quadruple toe loop and, like his compatriots, did not fall. He finished the competition in tenth place. All three Americans posted personal best points in the freestyle, Hochstein also with regard to his overall performance and Rippon with regard to all segments.
After a long period of inconsistency and the disappointing 15th place in the previous year, the Czech champion Michal Březina again achieved a top ten result in 9th place. Although he fell as usual on his first freestyle element, the quadruple Salchow , he found himself back on track and was able to hold the program together. For the Kazakh Olympic third party from Sochi, Denis Ten , the World Cup, like the entire season, was disappointing. In the end he finished eleventh. The Italian champion Ivan Righini achieved twelfth place with a decent performance and thus his best result at world championships.
The Israeli Alexei Bychenko , who had won silver behind Fernández at the European Championships , experienced a desolate short program that ended in 19th place for him. In the freestyle, however, he showed his skills and fought his way up to eleventh place with two quadruple toe loops. The young Latvian Deniss Vasiļjevs made a remarkable debut in 14th place . For the Uzbek last year's sixth Misha Ge , it was only 15th after a difficult season.
The Belgian Jorik Hendrickx achieved sixteenth place with his controversial Titanic freestyle, the music of which contained original voices from the film of the same name, and thus his best World Cup result. The Australian Brendan Kerry also had a sense of achievement with 17th place. He stood a four-fold toe loop in both the short program and freestyle , albeit with deductions for the degree of execution (GOE). Michael Christian Martinez from the Philippines achieved his best ever World Cup result with 19th place. Julian Zhi Jie Yee made a remarkable debut when he was the first Malaysian to ever take part in a men's competition and was able to qualify for the freestyle straight away. In the end he was 21. The Chinese Yan Han and the Canadian Nam Nguyen were surprisingly eliminated from the short program .

The short program took place on March 31st, the freestyle on April 2nd.

The Russian champion Yevgenia Medvedeva ran a new point record of 150.10 points in the freestyle and won her first world title. Silver went to the Heidelberg- born American Ashley Wagner , who had strong nerves and secured her long-awaited World Cup medal in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The Russian Anna Pogorilaja won the bronze medal. Last year's second and Japanese champion Satoko Miyahara took fifth place. Her fellow compatriot and three-time world champion Mao Asada finished seventh.
