The 2009 European Basketball Championship (officially: EuroBasket 2009 ) was the 36th edition of this tournament and took place from September 7th to 20th, 2009 in Poland . Spain won its first title. Serbia came in second ahead of Greece .
The European basketball championship is a biennial basketball competition between European national teams that is organized by Munich- based FIBA Europe , the European basketball association.
qualification
A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament, which qualified for the tournament in different ways:
Poland was automatically selected as the host.
The seven best national teams of the 2007 European Basketball Championship were directly qualified for the EuroBasket 2009. In order of placement, these were: Russia , Spain , Lithuania , Greece , Germany , Croatia and Slovenia .
The other eight participants were determined in a qualifying round again in a Division A and Division B was discharged. These were Serbia (winner group A), Macedonia (winner group B), Turkey (winner group C), Great Britain (winner group D), Bulgaria (second group A), Latvia (second group B), Israel (second group D) and France (second qualifying round winners).

Preliminary round
In the preliminary round four teams played against each other in four groups. On November 8, 2008 the groups were drawn in Warsaw . The winner of a game received two points, the loser one point.

After the preliminary round, the first three teams in each group qualified for the intermediate round. The three teams in groups A and B formed group E (Bydgoszcz), the qualified teams in groups C and D formed the new group F (Łódź). Each team competed once against each of the three teams from the other preliminary group. The points from the preliminary round matches against qualified teams were continued.

Final round
mode
After the intermediate round, the first four teams of both groups E and F qualified for the final round. The quarter-finals were played crosswise against an opponent from the other intermediate round group. Then both the winners of the quarter-finals in the semi-finals and the losers in the placement round for positions 5 to 8. The winners of the semi-finals played the final, the losers the game for 3rd place. The winners of the placement games played for 5th place, the losers for 7th place.
All games took place in the 11,500-seat Spodek Hall in Katowice.

Honors
The Spaniard Pau Gasol was chosen as the best player of the tournament ( MVP ) . In a total of nine games, Gasol averaged 18.7 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. He had a hit rate of 64.4% (65 out of 101) from the field and 64.3% (18 out of 28) from the free-throw line.
In addition to Gasol, the Spaniard Rudy Fernández (number 1 in steals and free throw rate), the Serb Miloš Teodosić (best assistant, second best free thrower), the Slovene Erazem Lorbek (third best scorer and rebounder) and the Greek Vasilios Spanoulis were elected to the All-Tournament Team .
