The Football League Second Division 1980/81 was the 78th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 16, 1980 and ended on May 8, 1981.

West Ham United became second division champions and the second and third placed Notts County and Swansea City also rose to the Football League First Division . The three first division clubs Norwich City , Leicester City and Crystal Palace, ranked in the table below, took the places for the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1981/82 . Preston North End , Bristol City and the Bristol Rovers had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Rotherham United and behind them FC Barnsley and Charlton Athletic took the vacant positions in the following season 1981/82 .
