The Football League Second Division 1986/87 was the 84th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 23, 1986 and ended on May 9, 1987.

Second division champion was Derby County and also the second-placed Portsmouth FC rose to the Football League First Division . From the play-off round, in which the third to fifth placed Oldham Athletic , Leeds United and Ipswich Town also took part in the table nineteenth of the First Division Charlton Athletic , Charlton emerged as the winner, so that no other club entered the Second Division left towards First Division. For the two promoted teams in the following second division season 1987/88 against the background of the league expansion from 22 to 23 teams, the three first division clubs Leicester City , Manchester City and Aston Villa ranked in the table below . Grimsby Town and Brighton & Hove Albion had to relegate directly from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . In addition, Sunderland AFC failed in the play-off round against third division clubs Swindon Town , Wigan Athletic and Gillingham FC in the semi-finals at Gillingham. Swindon as the later winner took in the following season 1987/88 as well as the third division winners AFC Bournemouth and behind them Middlesbrough FC one of the vacant positions.
