Gabriel (name)
Gabriel ( Hebrew : גַּבְרִיאֵל / Gavri'EL "God is my strength" or "the male / the strong through God") is a male first and family name. The name is composed of the Hebrew words Gavri (גברי), which stands in its meaning for masculinity or male strength and resilience, and the word EL (אל) , which is the Hebrew singular of ELOHIM.
The name is mentioned for the first time in the Bible in the book of Daniel 8: 15–16 SLT .
The feminine form of the name in Germany is Gabriele .
etymology
The basic form of the name "ga-bar, ga-ba-ri, gab-ri" was widespread in the ancient Orient with the expansion of the associated name of God . Mostly the spelling was done with the sumerogram DINGIR.MEŠ in the plural and referred to the expression “ilu, ili” (“gods”), which can be translated as “hero of the gods, divine hero”.
The singular usage is less common , in which the earlier kings usually placed their personal god in front of or behind the basic form of the name. For example, the kings of Edom called themselves “Qausch-gabri” (“the god Qausch is my hero, hero of the god Qausch”).
