Karl Schulze (born March 5, 1988 in Dresden ) is a German rower . He is Olympic champion in 2012 and 2016 in double fours . In the same boat class, he also won the 2015 World Championship and 2013 European Championship gold.

Career

At the Junior World Championships in 2005 Schulze took second place with a double scull, at the Junior World Championships in 2006 he was Junior World Champion, both times with Tim Grohmann on board . In 2007 Grohmann and Schulze competed in a double scull and won the silver medal at the U23 World Championships . After a third place at the U23 World Championships in 2008 and eighth place at the European Rowing Championships in 2008 in the adult class, Schulze returned to the quad in 2009 and finished fifth at the U23 World Championships.

In 2010 Karl Schulze rowed in one . He won the U23 World Championships, finished third at the 2010 European Rowing Championships and tenth place at the 2010 World Rowing Championships .

In 2011 the German double four won the World Cup opener in Munich with Tim Grohmann, Philipp Wende , Karl Schulze and Lauritz Schoof , after they had also won the German championship title in this line-up. In the line-up of Schulze, Wende, Schoof and Grohmann, the boat took second place at the World Cup in Hamburg and won in Lucerne. In this line-up, the quad also won the silver medal at the World Championships in Bled behind the Australian boat. At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 they won the gold medal on Dorney Lake .

In the new Olympic cycle, too, the German double scull was filled with constant minor changes from the core of the Olympic team. Schulze was able to take the European Championship title in Seville and second place at the World Championships in Chungju behind the Croatian team in 2013 . The following year the German double scull rowed with Schulze to bronze at both the European Championships in Belgrade and the World Championships in Amsterdam . At the European Rowing Championships 2015 , the team only finished sixth due to injury. At the World Championships in Aiguebelette , the cast of Karl Schulze, Philipp Wende, Lauritz Schoof and Hans Gruhne finally won the gold medal.

He also took part in the Summer Olympics in Rio, where he again won the gold medal with a double foursome. For this, he and the team were awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Gauck on November 1, 2016 .

Schulze then took a year off. At the German small boat championships in 2018 he reached 14th place. After a tenth place at the German championships in 2019, he started again as the bowman of the German double foursome. At the European Championships , the quad with Schulze, Timo Piontek, Max Appel and Lars Hartig took fourth place. At the World Championships in Ottensheim , the team Schulze, Piontek, Appel and Gruhne reached fifth place.

Karl Schulze rowed for the USV TU Dresden until 2014 . He has been working for the Berlin Rowing Club since early 2015 .
