Lúcio , real name Lucimar da Silva Ferreira (born May 8, 1978 in Brasília ), is a former Brazilian soccer player . The central defender began his men's career at SC Internacional in 1998 and moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga in 2001 . After five years with FC Bayern Munich and three and a half in Italy , he returned to his home country in 2013. After a stopover in India from 2015 to 2016 , he ended his career in Brazil in 2019. For the Brazilian national team , he played 105 international matches between 2000 and 2011. His greatest successes are winning the 2002 World Cup and the 2009/10 Champions League with Inter Milan .

Lúcio started playing football at Planaltina EC . He came to SC Internacional in Porto Alegre in 1998 through the Clube Regatas Guará . In January 2001, he moved to Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a fee equivalent to the equivalent of 8.5 million euros . The following season he finished second in the championship and reached the finals in the DFB Cup and the Champions League , in which he scored a goal.

In 2004 he switched to league rivals FC Bayern Munich . In central defense he played there with Robert Kovač , Valérien Ismaël and Daniel Van Buyten, among others . In his last two years with Munich, he mainly played alongside Martín Demichelis . In addition, he led the club several times as team captain in the absence of Oliver Kahn . From July 2008 he represented Mark van Bommel in this function.

On July 16, 2009 Lúcio moved to the Italian first division club Inter Milan and signed a three-year contract after Bayern coach Louis van Gaal had not given him a permanent place guarantee. On August 23, 2009 (1st matchday) Lúcio made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home against AS Bari in Serie A. On September 23 (5th matchday) he scored in a 3-1 win at home against the SSC Napoli with the goal to the meanwhile 3-0 his first goal for the Milanese. Lúcio formed one of the best central defenses in the world with the Argentinian Walter Samuel and Inter won the triple in 2010, consisting of the Italian championship, Coppa Italia and Champions League. The final of the Champions League was won 2-0 against FC Bayern Munich. In March 2011, Lúcio extended his contract term with Inter prematurely until summer 2013 with an option for a further year. On June 29, 2012, his contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

For the 2012/13 season Lúcio moved to the reigning Italian champions Juventus Turin , with whom he signed a contract valid until June 30, 2014. After his first appearance for Juventus, he won the Italian Super Cup . On December 17, 2012, the contract with Lúcio was terminated by mutual agreement. The reason was the defender's short playing times. He only made four appearances for the Bianconeri across all competitions .

A day later, Lúcio signed a two-year contract with São Paulo FC, returning to Brazil after twelve seasons in Europe. On May 26, 2013 (1st matchday), he came back to use for a Brazilian club team in the 2-0 win in the away game against AA Ponte Preta . He crowned his debut with the opening goal to make it 1-0 in the eighth minute.

Since his contract with São Paulo FC, which was originally valid until the end of 2014, had been terminated, Lúcio moved on January 9, 2014 to first division promoted and city rivals Palmeiras São Paulo , with whom he signed a contract valid until December 31, 2015. For the club, Lúcio completed 25 league games and scored two goals. He made his debut on April 20, 2014 (1st matchday) in a 2-1 win in the away game against Criciúma EC . With the 1-1 draw in the home game against Athletico Paranaense on December 7, 2014 (38th matchday), the division was able to score two points ahead of EC Vitória (0: 1 in the home game against FC Santos ) and three points ahead of EC Bahia ( 2: 3 in the away game against Coritiba FC ).

For the season 2015 (October 3 to December 6) joined Lúcio the Indian Super League -Club FC Goa , for which he on October 4, 2015 (1st Round) in the 2: 0 win at home to the Delhi Dynamos FC debuted . However, he did not play a game for the club. Instead, he moved to league rivals Brasiliense FC in April of that year and played 17 games and scored one goal. Working for his last club in Taguatinga from April 17, 2018 to October 10, 2019 , he ended his football career at the age of 41.

National team

On November 15, 2000 Lúcio made his debut in the senior national team , which defeated the national team of Colombia 1-0 in São Paulo in the qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup . He scored his first of four international goals on February 9, 2005 in Hong Kong  - as part of the Carlsberg Cup  - in a 7-1 win over the Hong Kong national team .

Lúcio took part with the Seleção in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and won the final against the German national team on June 30, 2-0, the world title. As an integral part of his team throughout the tournament, he made a significant contribution to the title.

He also triumphed at the Confederations Cup in Germany in 2005 . On June 29th, the national team of Argentina was defeated 4-1 in the final. At the 2006 World Cup , Lúcio set a record in this competition when he only committed a foul in the quarterfinals against the French national team after 386 minutes .

After the World Cup, he was appointed team captain by national coach Dunga . In 2009 he again took part in the Confederations Cup , was used several times in the course of the tournament and scored the winning goal in the final against the national team of the United States . In 2010 , Lúcio took part in his third World Cup and played all matches of his team as captain. After the disappointing tournament, new coach Mano Menezes gave him a break and increasingly relied on young, new players in the Seleção . Due to Lúcio's good performances, Menezes could not get past him and nominated him for the squad for the 2011 Copa America in Argentina, where Lúcio again led the Brazilian team as captain. This was the first and only participation in the South American Championship for him . On July 3, 2011, he played his 100th international match in Brazil's first tournament game against the national team of Venezuela .

Despite his actually defensive position, Lúcio occasionally switched to the offensive. His game was characterized by tempo dribbles, especially during the Leverkusen time. Under Ottmar Hitzfeld in Munich, he had to concentrate more on his defensive qualities from 2007 to 2008, but occasionally did not miss offensive actions.
