Mercer County was formed on January 13, 1825 from territory that was designated as free - but actually populated by Indians . It was named after Hugh Mercer (1726–1777), a general in the Continental Army who fell at the Battle of Princeton .

According to the 2010 census , Mercer County had 16,434 people in 6,714 households. The population density was 11.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.40 people lived in each of the 6,714 households.
