Möhlin ( Swiss German : younger ˈmøːli , older ˈmeːli ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Rheinfelden district , lies in the west of the Fricktal region on the Upper Rhine and borders Germany and the canton of Basel-Landschaft . The third largest municipality in the canton with almost 19 km² is part of the agglomeration of the city of Basel .

geography

location

Möhliner field
Well-developed terminal moraine in the northeast of Möhlin

The community is located 19 km east of Basel in a fertile loess plain at the exit of the Möhlintal . It consists of the districts of Obermöhlin, Untermöhlin and Riburg . These districts have grown together completely and extend over a length of three and a half kilometers along the Möhlinbach . Extensive forests stretch along the banks of the Rhine . There was once a settlement there called Rappertshäuser , which was abandoned in the 17th century and is overgrown today.

The area of the municipality is 1880 hectares, of which 688 hectares are forested and 362 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 636  m above sea level. M. on the summit of the Sonnenberg, the deepest at 280  m above sea level. M. on the Rhine. Neighboring communities are Wallbach in the northeast, Zeiningen in the east, Maisprach in the south, Magden in the southwest and Rheinfelden in the west. To the north borders Möhlin to the German communities Schwörstadt and military on the other side of the Rhine.

nature and landscape

The largest part of the municipality consists of the Möhliner field. It is a mighty terminal moraine that was formed during the Riss Ice Age around 140,000 years ago and formed the most north-westerly point of the alpine glaciation. Due to the erosion , an elevated, extended plain was created, which is cut through by the Möhlintal near Obermöhlin and drops down to 50 meters at the edges. The Möhliner Feld is known as the “granary” of the Fricktal. In the very south it goes over to the Sonnenberg ( 636  m above sea level ), a foothill of the Table Jura . The Fricktaler Höhenweg , a hiking route of around 60 km , runs over its summit and directly past the observation tower .

There are several nature reserves of cantonal importance in Möhlin . The Breitsee , a peat bog, lies in the northeast of the municipality in the middle of the large Möhliner forest . During the last Ice Age, a hollow was formed in this place in which weathering dust was deposited for thousands of years . As a result, a meter thick waterproof layer was formed. In the period from 3000 to 1000 BC The peat formation began . Because of the peat layer, the water of the Breitsee appears unusually dark. The Breitsee is surrounded by a quarry forest with birch and black alder . Over 140 species of plants grow in the Breitsee area. Frequently observed animal species are u. a. Grebes , moorhens , Tufted Duck , Eurasian Hobby or black woodpecker . In spring and autumn, the Breitsee is often used as a resting place by migratory birds.

Breitsee nature reserve

In the north of Möhlin, the Haumättli nature reserve is located directly on the Rhine . This floodplain area of national importance lies in the reservoir area of the Ryburg-Schwörstadt power plant. In the lower bank area mainly reeds and reeds grow , alder trees and willows a little higher up . The old ash trees above the bank are used as nesting and breeding space for various bird species. The inhabitants of the Haumättlis include u. a. Reed bunting , kingfisher , bat and beaver .

The Möhlinbach flows through the Bachtele in the last 500 meters before it flows into the Rhine . The protected meadow area offers the habitat of numerous birds, amphibians , reptiles and insects. There are also special climatic conditions in the valley of the Bachtele. The Bachtele is largely sheltered from the wind, moist and acts like a heat store. In summer there is often an almost tropical climate in the Bachtele. So it is not surprising that the vegetation has also adapted to these climatic conditions.

In the vast forest areas under - and the Forestry and the Forest Reserve Sunneberg frequently encountered mammals include. a. Roe deer , wild boar , red fox , stone marten and pine marten , squirrel , hedgehog , brown hare ; more rarely badger , polecat , mole and dormouse . Lynx , raccoon and chamois have also been spotted here and there. The white stork has also been at home again since 1970 . Today it is hard to imagine Möhlin without it. In the stork station in the Riburg district there are around a dozen nests to which the stork pairs return every year and raise their brood there.

climate

In the Rhine plain between Basel and Möhlin there is a mild climate thanks to favorable influences. This is largely determined by the flow of Mediterranean air from the Rhone Valley through the Burgundian Gate . In addition, a weather divide forms in Möhlin, especially in winter. Here the Möhlin-Jet ensures that the fog is dissolved with the help of southwest winds from Burgundy, even when the wind is low. Because of these factors and because of the lower location in the plains between the Jura and the Black Forest , Möhlin has higher temperatures and up to 40 sunny days more than the Central Plateau . The private weather service Meteomedia in Möhlin measured a temperature record for this area on August 5, 2003 with 40.3 ° C.

history

1983 excavations near Riburg uncovered the foundations of a Roman manor . It was built in the middle of the 1st century, was 70 × 30 m and had hypocaust heating . However, no furnishings were found. Along the Rhine - more precisely on the spur of the Bürkli , in the Fahrgraben and in the lower weirs - stood three Roman watchtowers that guarded the northern border of the empire from 370 onwards. In particular, the Bürkli fort at the mouth of the Möhlinbach can still be seen clearly.

In 794, Melina was first mentioned in a document . The place name comes from the old European river name Malina , which means "swelling water". At that time there were several hamlets in what is now the municipality, which later grew together and form today's Möhlin (Ober- and Unterhof Meli, Ober- and Untermöhlin, Stadelbach, Riburg and Niederriburg). Möhlin is around two centuries older than the neighboring town of Rheinfelden . The Möhlin Church of St. Leodegar was subordinate to the Beuggen Monastery and so the tithe had to be delivered to the Teutonic Order domiciled there .

First rulers were the Counts of Homberg-Tierstein, from 1232 the Habsburgs . After the Waldshut War of 1468, they pledged the entire Fricktal to Burgundy . When the Burgundians were defeated by the Confederates during the Burgundian Wars , Möhlin came under Austrian rule again in 1477. After the imperial reform of the Austrian Emperor Maximilian I in 1491, Möhlin belonged to Upper Austria and was located in the Möhlinbach region , a subordinate administrative unit of the Rheinfelden cameramen (from 1752 in the Oberamt Breisgau ).

In the 17th century there were hardly any longer times of peace. The Rappenkrieg , a peasant uprising, lasted from 1612 to 1614. The Thirty Years War , which also affected the Fricktal between 1633 and 1638, threw the village back in its economic development. During the siege of Rheinfeld, Swedish troops plundered and destroyed the village of Rappertshäuser on the banks of the Rhine . At this time the village was finally abandoned. There are two similar legends that attribute the extinction to the plague . The entire community ban of Rappertshäuser initially fell to Rheinfelden and was exchanged for part of Riburg. Foreign troops also moved through the region during the War of the Palatinate Succession (1688–1697). In 1797 the Fricktal became a French protectorate after the Peace of Campo Formio . During the Second Coalition War , the front line between the armies of France and Austria ran here . On February 20, 1802 Möhlin became a municipality in the Rheinfelden district of the canton Fricktal , which joined the Helvetic Republic in August . The municipality has belonged to the canton of Aargau since February 19, 1803.

In 1840 the residents of Riburg tried to separate this district from Möhlin again. They referred to having always been an independent community, although this could not be documented. The canton refused to separate the municipalities, not least because Riburg supposedly could not have survived financially as an independent municipality. With the founding of the Riburg salt works in 1848, industrialization began, which intensified with the opening of the Bözbergbahn on August 2, 1875. In 1932 the Bata shoe factory was opened. The suburbanization began and Möhlin developed into a suburban community of the city of Basel . Particularly since the beginning of the 1980s, there has been strong growth in the number of residents.

Consequences of the Kulturkampf

The First Vatican Council under Pope Pius IX. proclaimed a teaching document on the Catholic faith, the papal jurisdiction primacy, in the summer of 1870, and made the doctrine of the Pope's infallibility a definitive dogma. This led to negative reactions in many places - this also happened in Möhlin. In the course of the culture war in Switzerland , the Möhlin parish assembly decided in a historic vote in December 1872 not to accept the new dogmas , which led to the division of the church and the founding of the Christian Catholic Church . As a result, the church of St. Leodegar - at that time the only church building in Möhlin - became the property of the newly founded congregation. In the 1940s, a Roman Catholic and an Evangelical Reformed church were finally built.

Today the Christian Catholic Church in town is the smallest of the three regional churches; With around 1,000 members, there are more Christian Catholics in Möhlin than in any other place in Switzerland. The sixth bishop of the Christian Catholic Church in Switzerland, Fritz-René Müller , also comes from Möhlin. In Möhlin great value has always been attached to ecumenism. The postmark bears Möhlin's title “Village of Three Churches” all over the world. The three regional churches, which each have their own house of worship in Möhlin, work together in an ecumenical working group and repeatedly offer joint events and services. In addition to the three church buildings, there are also two chapels in Möhlin: the Fridolinskapelle in the Riburg district and the Wendolinskapelle in the Obermöhlin district.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In red, yellow sheaf of corn, covered with a blue sickle with a black handle." A sheaf is depicted on the municipal seal from 1811, but still without a sickle. This first appeared in 1926, but was white with a red handle. The cantonal coat of arms commission recommended a blue sickle, which was then added in 1958. The Riburg district also has its own coat of arms. This shows a yellow haystack in red on a yellow background with a scythe, pitchfork and rake sticking out of it.

population

The population developed as follows:

year 1768 1850 1900 1930 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000 2010
Residents 1102 1940 2209 2858 3830 4681 6003 6360 7125 8297 10'025

On December 31, 2019, 11,062 people lived in Möhlin, the proportion of foreigners was 25%. In the 2015 census, 31.7% described themselves as Roman Catholic , 20.8% as Reformed and 8.2% as Christian Catholic ; 39.3% were non-denominational or of another faith. In the 2000 census, 87.8% named German as their main language, 3.5% Italian , 1.9% Albanian , 1.7% Serbo-Croatian , 0.8% each of French and Turkish , 0.7% English and 0.6 % % Spanish .

Breiti development area

With over 11,000 inhabitants, Möhlin is one of the ten largest towns in the canton of Aargau. The sustained strong construction activity and the resulting increase in population transformed Möhlin into a modern agglomeration community within the last two decades. In 2010, the degree of building development (built-up building zone as a percentage of the entire building zone) rose to over 90% and was already assuming core city values. With only 5.6 hectares of vacant building land, the degree of overbuilding in the residential and mixed zones was as much as 97.1% in 2011. This extraordinarily high value is only exceeded by Wettingen in the canton of Aargau .

In 2009 and 2010, the “Settlement and Cultural Land Use Planning” was subjected to a comprehensive overall revision. The revised building zone and cultivated land plan stipulated a total of 10 hectares of building land for the next 15 years. However, there was massive opposition from the population against these plans, so that the general revision at the extraordinary community meeting on October 20, 2010 was rejected. About a year later, on September 22, 2011, the revised plans were again brought before the community assembly. Since the area of the proposed building land for zoning was reduced by half to only 5 hectares, the voters accepted the applications. Due to the acute shortage of building land, the pressure on high-density building will continue to increase. As a result, it can be assumed that more and more older properties will be replaced by new, dense developments, which will increasingly give the site an urban character.

Politics and law

Möhlin parish hall

In contrast to other communities in Aargau of comparable size, Möhlin does not have a residents' council . The legislative power is exercised directly democratically through the assembly of the voters at the municipal assembly . The community meetings take place every six months in the middle of the year ("summer community") and at the end of the year ("winter community"). All resolutions of the municipal assembly (with the exception of those on naturalization) are subject to an optional referendum , provided that the resolutions were passed by a non-quorum minority of those entitled to vote. This gives those entitled to vote the opportunity to force a subsequent ballot vote. At the municipal assembly, the voters decide on municipal submissions. Among other things, they approve the estimate and the invoice from the municipal administration and set the tax rate. In the case of elections, major financial commitments or changes to the municipal regulations, the entire population is called to vote in the ballot box.

The executing authority is the five-member municipal council . He is elected by the people in the majority procedure, his term of office is four years. The parish council leads and represents the parish. To this end, it implements the resolutions of the municipal assembly and the tasks assigned to it by the canton. The Rheinfelden District Court is the first instance responsible for legal disputes . Möhlin belongs to the Friedensrichterkreis XIV (Rheinfelden).

In the Swiss parliamentary elections 2019, the share of the vote in Möhlin was: SVP 31.9%, SP 17.1%, Greens 10.9%, FDP 10.7%, glp 9.8%, CVP 9.4%, team 65+ 3.1%, EVP 3.1%, BDP 2.2%, EDU 1.0%.

The local civil parish includes those residents who are citizens of Möhlin. Its main task is the management of the local citizens' property, the origin of which lies in the civil estates that were taken over from the time of the Ancien Régime . For example, the local community owns 469 hectares of forest, which is managed by its own forestry company. Her property also includes the local museum, the community center, the forest house, the Bachtalen campsite, the Hirschenpark, a gravel works and various other plots and properties. Legislative is the local citizens' assembly, executive is the municipal council of the municipality.

In addition to the municipal administration, there is also a debt enforcement office in the parish hall . This authority is responsible for the execution of the debt enforcement for the districts Möhlin, Wallbach, Zeiningen and Zuzgen . Until the end of 2006, the Möhlin community police were also housed in the community hall. Since the merger to form the Lower Fricktal regional police, there is still an outpost of the new regional police authority based in Rheinfelden in the parish hall.

economy

industrial area

According to the corporate structure statistics (STATENT) collected in 2015, Möhlin has around 4,200 jobs, 3% of them in agriculture, 26% in industry and 71% in the service sector. The industry is concentrated in the Riburg district . Among other things, the saline of the Swiss Rhine salt works as well as the Ryburg-Schwörstadt power plant (both in the Rheinfeld municipality), the Bata shoe factory , the Frigosuisse deep-freeze warehouse, a Manor distribution center and numerous companies in the construction industry are located there. The industrial area in the northeast of Möhlin has its own track system and thus a direct connection to the Basel-Zurich railway line ( Bözbergbahn ). The road connection to the motorway network is via an industrial feeder. Numerous workers are commuters and work mainly in the city or agglomeration of Basel .

Various markets are held regularly on the parish hall square. The most important annual markets are the “May Market”, which takes place on a weekend in May, and the three-day “Advent Market” at the beginning of December. The markets each attract numerous exhibitors and visitors from the region. The “Möga” trade exhibition takes place in Möhlin every four to five years. The nationally known major event is organized by the “Gewerbeverein Möhlin und Umgebung” (GMU), which has almost 200 members.

traffic

railway station

Möhlin is very well developed in terms of transport. The main road 3 (referred to in Möhlin Landstrasse), which runs through the district Obermöhlin, one of the main national roads in Switzerland (Basel-Zurich-Chur). From Basel to Stein it is congruent with Hauptstrasse 7 (Basel – Winterthur – St. Gallen). From this a local road branches off towards the south through the Möhlintal . A partly winding road, which branches off to the north in Obermöhlin, leads to the center of Möhlin and connects the individual districts with each other. The industrial area is accessed by a feeder. This branches off from Hauptstrasse 3 at the roundabout between Rheinfelden and Möhlin and leads as Neue Kantonsstrasse NK495 via Riburg into the Möhlin industrial area. The closest junction to the A3 motorway is Rheinfelden-Ost, around 3 km west of Möhlin.

The train station is located between the districts of Untermöhlin and Riburg on the SBB - Bözberg route . The S1 line of the Basel S-Bahn runs from Basel to Frick or Laufenburg . In addition, there are occasional express trains on the Basel SBB - Zurich HB and Zurich Airport - Basel SBB lines that stop in Möhlin .

Möhlin's public transport network is part of the Northwestern Switzerland Tariff Association (TNW), which covers the entire greater Basel region. The community is served by the three bus routes 88 ( Rheinfelden –Möhlin Bäumlimatt Ost train station ), 89 (Möhlin – Zeiningen – Wegenstetten) and 90 (Möhlin – Mumpf – Wegenstetten) of the PostBus Northern Switzerland . These serve 14 stops in the residential area and five in the industrial area. On weekends, a night S-Bahn runs from Basel through the Fricktal to Brugg and a night bus from Möhlin through the Möhlintal and Fischingertal back to Möhlin.

education

Primary school in Fuchsrain

As a central municipality, Möhlin offers all school levels that are familiar to the compulsory elementary school system in the canton of Aargau. The community has six kindergartens , which are divided into eleven departments. The primary school is taught in the four school buildings Obermatt (old and new school building), Fuchsrain or Storebode , each of which is spread over the three districts. The upper level school is divided into the three trains of Real , Secondary and District School (level ascending). While the Steinli schoolhouse in the Riburg district is shared by the Real and Secondary School, lessons at the district school take place in the Fuchsrain district schoolhouse in the Untermöhlin district. In Möhlin there is also a music school and special classes such as the enrollment class , small class and career choice school . Due to an intercantonal agreement, young people from parts of the Fricktal can complete the high school in Muttenz (Canton Basel-Landschaft). In August 2010, the Möhlin schools had a total of 1,439 students, 256 of them from outside Germany. The school management and administration is located in the community center .

Culture

Melihus village museum

The municipality of Möhlin has had a local museum since 1985. The Melihus village museum in the center of Möhlin, set up in an old Fricktal farmhouse, provides insights into the past of the community. Among other things, home furnishings and living culture from the turn of the century around 1900, various collections (products from the former stoneware manufacturer Möhlin-Riburg, prehistoric and early historical as well as sacred objects), contemporary witnesses from agriculture and forestry as well as from various areas of the handicraft , a model of the district are shown Riburg around 1900, boundary stones of the abandoned village of Rappertshäuser .

Is centrally located next to the town hall, the community center , where, together with the school administration and the municipal library is housed with a stock of nearly 17,000 media. There has been a culture commission in Möhlin for more than 40 years. On behalf of the community, this ensures that cultural life in Möhlin is actively promoted. The Culture Commission organizes a cultural event at least once a month.

The teacher's theater makes a major contribution to the cultural life of Möhlin . The theater group was founded in 1958 and has meanwhile achieved supra-regional importance. In 1990 the teacher's theater was awarded the Aargau canton of homeland security prize. From 1975 the ensemble used the Rössli-Schüüre as a place to rehearse and perform ; Since August 2011, the teacher's theater has been located in the listed factory hall No. 2 in Bata Park . The annual Möhlin Talent Stage is becoming increasingly popular, especially among young people in the region. It offers artists the opportunity to show their talent in the field of music and dance. In addition, there is a cultural exchange between the young people and various youth meetings and youth work centers.

Carnival

Carnival parade

Möhlin is known for its lively carnival tradition, which reaches its climax in February / March with the street carnival . The oldest carnival grouping is the Ryburg carnival guild , whose beginnings date back to 1923. The guild consists of the Elferrat , the Ryburger Gugger , the Ryburger Tambours , the wagon builders and many other guild members. The reels of the Ryburg carnival guild are among the best reel sections in Switzerland. The three Swiss championship titles in the top class S1 from 2006 (Basel), 2010 (Interlaken) and 2018 (Bulle) are among the greatest successes. In 1964 the Meler Galgevögel was founded . In 1984, with the Coconuts, a rhythm band was created that sees itself as an alternative to the traditional Möhlin Carnival. Other independent groups were created later.

Moves have been carried out regularly since 1946. The 1.3 km long route begins at the Narrenbrunnen near the Fridolinskapelle (“Chäppeli”) and ends at the old chancellery. During the two parades on Carnival Sunday and Tuesday, dozens of car cliques show their mostly lavishly decorated carnival carriages on which they have implemented their subjects . From the car, the audience is not only given sweets and fruit, but also sprinkled with confetti. Part of the move are also numerous gugges, tambours and various foot and small groups. The parade on Carnival Sunday - the highlight of the Möhlin Carnival - attracts over 2,000 active carnival enthusiasts and between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors every year. This makes it the largest move in the region. Other notable events include the Morgestraich which Schnitzelbankobe , the price masked ball , the children's parade , the children's ball and the Gugger concert . The carnival events are financed to a large extent by the sale of plaques in gold, silver and bronze. The Möhlin Carnival ends with the traditional funeral ceremony (Carnival burning) on Ash Wednesday .
