The Monte Moro Pass is 2853  m above sea level. M. high Saumpass that crosses the main ridge of the Valais Alps east of the Monte Rosa massif .

location

The border between Italy and Switzerland runs over the pass . The pass connects the Valais Saas Valley with the Italian Valle Anzasca , a western side valley of the Valle d'Ossola (Ashen Valley ). The top of the pass is dominated by the Seewjinenhorn ( 3205  m above sea level ) and Monte Moro ( 2868  m above sea level ) in the west, and by the Joderhorn ( 3036  m above sea level ) in the east .

history

The relatively easy to walk Monte Moro Pass was never an important transalpine route. However, it was of regional importance in the High Middle Ages , as can be seen from the remains of the paved mule track. During this time, many Saas ( Walser ) migrated over the southern main ridge of the Alps and settled in the valleys east and south of Monte Rosa.

Development

The mule track starting from Saas-Almagell leads south along the Mattmark reservoir to the headwaters of the Saas Vispa and then climbs steeply to the top of the pass. Just south of the pass is the Rifugio Gaspare Oberto at 2810  m slm . From there there is also a steep descent to the Italian passport location Staffa , a district of the municipality of Macugnaga . From here, a cable car leads in two sections almost to the Monte Moro Pass, which offers a view of the highest peaks of Monte Rosa.
