The Canadian Tire Motorsports Park is a motorsport race track in Clarington ( Durham Region ), Canada . The route has become known under the name Mosport , which is a combination of the words motor and sport .

investment

The facility consists of a 2.5 mile (4 km) long race track with ten corners, on which races of the United SportsCar Championship are held, among other things . There is also a one-kilometer-long kart track and a Driver Development Center , a 1.5-mile test track. The facility also had a half-mile oval on which the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series , the Canadian equivalent of the American NASCAR Sprint Cup series, was held. The oval was closed in 2013, which is why the Canadian NASCAR only drives on the circuit. A NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race has also been held on the circuit since 2013 .

In 1967 and 1969 and from 1971 to 1977 was here Canadian Grand Prix of Formula 1 held, in 1967 was once the Canadian Grand Prix for motorcycles instead.

The route was renamed at the beginning of the 2012 season, as the operators entered into a cooperation with the Canadian Tire company .

On August 11, 1985, the racing driver Manfred Winkelhock had a serious accident on the track, a few hours later he died of his injuries in hospital.

Route

A lap on the very fast racetrack begins on the short start-finish straight, which leads into a long 90 ° right-hand bend. After the bend, the track drops sharply and after a short straight turns into the second bend, Clayton Corner . This left curve is also long and leads directly into the somewhat narrower Quebec Corner , which in turn goes right. A full-throttle left-hand bend then leads to the strongest braking point in front of the Moss Corner . This double right turn is the slowest part of the course and leads to the long back straight, the Mario Andretti Straightaway . There follows a medium-fast combination of corners known as The Esses . This right-left-right combination gets closer and closer and leads back to the start-finish straight.
