history

The first documentary mention of the place - which is controversial in professional circles - is dated to the year 1185 (according to the Siegburger Miracle Book ). The "parochia Niwinstat" (parish Neustadt) is mentioned in 1213 in a document of the Heisterbach monastery . Neustadt an der Wied belonged to the Altenwied office for more than five centuries and was thus - with interruptions - under the rule of the Electorate of Cologne . The early history of the parish is closely linked to the name of the Saynian Countess Mechthild von Sayn , who transferred the patronage of the Cistercian Abbey of Heisterbach in 1254 . Heisterbach's pastoral care continued until the abbey was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . In 1815 Neustadt became Prussian.

Since the 17th century there was an ore mine in Neustadt, which was closed in 1902 and which is reminiscent of the street name "Im Schiefer". The Linz – Altenkirchen railway line, which opened in 1912, ceased operations in 1961. At the beginning of the 20th century Neustadt gained importance as a tourist destination ("summer resort") with hotels, restaurants, pensions and a lido on the Wied.

coat of arms

Neustadt coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided by silver and red; above two crossed red lily sticks; below three, 2: 1 posed, gold-crowned silver eagle heads. "

The coat of arms has been legally valid since October 19, 1981 based on a design by G. Becker, Etscheid.

Justification of the coat of arms: The three eagle heads are the coat of arms of the bailiffs of Panau - today part of Neustadt -, 1378-1403, who exercised the judicial office in Neustadt. They were followed in office by the lower noble family of those of Neustadt, called Munt (Mandt), 1390–1555. Your coat of arms are the crossed lily wands.

Public facilities

Neustadt has three schools and two church-run kindergartens. The primary school “In der Au” primarily supplies the local community of Neustadt, while the catchment area of the state secondary school and the Wiedtal high school extends beyond the community.

The Wiedtal-Gymnasium was founded in 1976 by the Neuwied district.

Due to the close proximity to the state secondary school, the students enjoy the benefits of a school center with shared facilities such as B. Central library and specialist rooms. There is close cooperation between the schools in the school center, especially in the orientation level (grades 5 and 6) (e.g. the same learning materials in some subjects, teacher exchange). In this way, a well-founded career recommendation can be given at the end of the orientation level. The new classes 5 are composed in such a way that children from the same elementary school can attend the same class if possible.

There is a local community library on site. In addition, there is a Catholic and a Protestant parish with their own churches in Neustadt, as well as the St. Josefshaus nursing home. The place has a sports center, a community center with sports and multi-purpose hall and the Wiedparkhalle, officially inaugurated in January 2004, which is used for cultural and social events.
