Perry County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is in New Lexington .

The county is located in southeastern Ohio and has an area of 1069 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Licking County , Muskingum County , Morgan County , Athens County , Hocking County, and Fairfield County .

The Perry County Courthouse and Jail is one of 13 entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places.

Perry County was formed on December 26, 1817 from parts of Fairfield, Muskingum and Washington Counties. It was named after Oliver Hazard Perry , a naval officer in the British-American War from 1812 to 1814.

According to the 2000 census , Perry County had 34,078 people in 12,500 households and 9,350 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.54 percent white, 0.22 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.45 percent of the population.

Of the 12,500 households, 36.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 60.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.8 percent were single mothers, 25.2 percent were non-families, 21.4 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.13.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 28.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,383 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,294. Males had a median income of $ 31,664 versus $ 21,147 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,674. 9.4 percent of families and 11.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 15.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
