Perry County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is in New Lexington .

The county is located in southeastern Ohio and has an area of ​​1069 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Licking County , Muskingum County , Morgan County , Athens County , Hocking County, and Fairfield County .

Perry County was formed on December 26, 1817 from parts of Fairfield, Muskingum and Washington Counties. It was named after Oliver Hazard Perry , a naval officer in the British-American War from 1812 to 1814.

According to the 2000 census , Perry County had 34,078 people in 12,500 households and 9,350 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer.
