Theater of the West
The Theater des Westens (since 2011: Stage Theater des Westens ) is one of the most famous musical and operetta stages in Berlin . It is located at Kantstrasse 10-12 in the Charlottenburg district ( City West ).
history
founding
The theater was built in 1895/1896 in the style of Wilhelmine historicism by Bernhard Sehring on the former coal field of the C. Bolle dairy . Work on Kantstrasse began in August 1895 and the foundation stone was laid on September 4, 1895. The first operator of the theater was Theater des Westens GmbH , a company owned by Bernhard Sehring and Paul Blumenreich. The theater was opened on October 1, 1896 with Holger Drachmann's fairytale play Thousand and One Nights . In the autumn of 1897 Alois Prasch took over the management, which he had to give up again in 1898. From 1903 to 1906 he ran the theater again. After the desired success of the theater initially failed to materialize, the house was then used as an opera stage from 1898 and as an operetta theater from 1908 .
A fire severely damaged the house on August 25, 1912, after which it was restored. In 1922 the opera moved into the theater and a non-profit public limited company was founded (not to be confused with the older Volksoper on Belle-Alliance-Straße).
The consequences of hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic and a lack of shareholders forced the stock corporation to close the theater in 1925.
Roaring Twenties
In the " golden twenties " Carl Richter became the new director. Constantly changing lease agreements left an unmanageable labyrinth of directors and artistic directors and as a result a very changeable game plan emerged in the later years. The guest performances of the dance group Mary Wigman and Anna Pawlowa in 1926 triggered storms of applause. The performances in the Theater des Westens increasingly came into competition with the furnishing revues in the Admiralspalast and the Großes Schauspielhaus .
Emil Schwarz became the new tenant and artistic director. His new revues The Train to the West and Do you already know ...? did not find a great response.
Hans Lüpschütz took over the theater and mixed traditional plays, including Die Fledermaus or Alt Heidelberg , with modern performances and cast them with prominent personalities of the time, such as Fritzi Massary in Eine Frau von Format 1927, Max Adalbert in Das Ekel 1928 and Josephine Baker in Please Boarding 1928.
From 1929 Alfred Rotter and Fritz Rotter leased the theater on Kantstrasse with the Deutsche Schauspiel-Betriebs-Aktiengesellschaft ; Hans Lüpschütz remained the director. The Rotter brothers were also general directors in the Metropol-Theater in Behrenstrasse and owners of the Lessing-Theater . The theater was with the staging Friedericke of Franz Lehár reopened, taken directly from the Metropol Theater, there were Kathe Dorsch and Richard Tauber on the Cast list. This was followed by Marietta , Hotel Stadt Lemberg and, in April 1930, The Land of Smiles, alternating with Paganini . In the 1930/1931 season, the Rotter brothers sub - leased the Theater des Westens and the Lessing Theater to Heinz Saltenburg and the Saltenburg Theaters were founded.
In 1931 the Mistinguett made a successful guest appearance in the Mistinguett Revue in the Theater des Westens.
In the basement of the theater was located from 1921 to 1923, the Wilde stage of Trude Hesterberg , from 1931 Tingel-Tangel Theater , directed by Friedrich Hollaender .
The Rotter brothers got caught up in a financial scandal and were hated by the press as the “ Jewish financial hassardur ”. In 1932 a Mr. Spitz was appointed as the new director in the person of the director and planned a popular operetta program.
time of the nationalsocialism
After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists on January 30, 1933, the light muse continued to be shown in the Theater des Westens under the direction of Karl Jöken together with his wife Edith Schollwer . The performances were called Everything for Eva , Young Wine , Alluring Flame and So Twittering the Boys . On December 29, 1933, all theater directors were asked to live up to the slogan Kraft durch Freude (KdF).
It was not until December 23, 1934 that the theater became part of the National Socialist program Kraft durch Freude with Albert Lortzing's Der Waffenschmied . reopened and was named Volksoper . In the Deutsches Bühnen-Jahrbuch 1936 , as with many other theaters, the Reich Ministry for Public Enlightenment and Propaganda was named as the operator and a subsidy from the German Labor Front is shown. Head of the former was established in July 1935 Danziger general director and general music director Erich Orthmann appointed. The new season began on October 1, 1935 with the opera Fidelio .
After a major air raid during the Second World War , some Berlin theaters were able to play again at the end of 1943, but not the Volksoper. Folk opera concerts took place in the Plaza and the Philharmonie and a guest performance on April 25, 1944 in Hirschberg (today: Jelenia Góra ). Damage from bomb hits could be repaired by June 7, 1944. On July 14, 1944, the Berliner Lokal-Anzeiger wrote the article Die Theaters unter dem Luftterror . In particular, the roof as well as the foyer and administration area were badly damaged.
Municipal Opera
After the provisional restoration of the roof for the auditorium, Heinz Tietjen was appointed head of all opera theaters in Berlin on May 14, 1945 by the city commandant Nikolai Erastowitsch Bersarin . Heinz Tietjen then commissioned Michael Bohnen as artistic director of the municipal opera. From May 15, 1945, the house was now the home of the Städtische Oper Berlin (German Opera House) because the auditorium of the opera house on Bismarckstrasse had been destroyed during the war. In the German Opera House, Beethoven's Fidelio took place on September 2, 1945, the first opera performance in Berlin after the Second World War. The production was carried out by the director of the opera, Hans Wenzel (1904–1966).

Operetta and musical theater 1961–1978
Since then, the Theater des Westens has been used primarily for operettas and musicals. The first performance on October 1, 1961, was Frederick Loewe's musical My Fair Lady .
Karl-Heinz Stracke became director in 1964 and ran the theater very successfully. In order to prevent a financial gap in good time, Stracke gave up the management of the theater and Siegfried Wölffer became the new tenant. The Wölffer brothers had already directed the theater from 1961 and could no longer build on the success of the musical My Fair Lady . In 1974 Vincent and Eynar Grabowsky became sub-tenants. From 1976 the Grabowsky brothers also got caught up in a financial scandal; Missing fees, fraudulent subsidies and evaded taxes up to an arrest warrant also brought the Grabowsky era to an end.
Operetta and musical theater 1978–2003
In 1978 the entire theater was modernized, in the same year Karl Vibach took over the management of the house. In the 1980s, the building was repeatedly renovated and modernized, both inside and out. In 1984 Götz Friedrich became director of the house, Helmut Baumann its artistic director. The first two great successes of this time were Guys and Dolls and La Cage aux Folles .
In 1988 Götz Friedrich directed Porgy and Bess, the first new production of an "all black opera" in Europe and enjoyed a sensational worldwide success. He and his chief dramaturge Valerie Hennecke, who built up production for two years, including head PR and marketing between Berlin and New York , received the “Audience Award”. The multiple cast was cast in New York ( Harlem ) and Berlin .
At that time the Theater des Westens GmbH was one of the most modern musical stages in Europe with sophisticated technical equipment and inventions. There was a cooperation with all embassies in Berlin, the Berliner Festspiele for the Berliner Festwochen, the International Film Festival regarding the annual International Film Awards, the RIAS , the SOB and the Deutsche Oper Berlin (as a replacement stage due to renovation work). that the "Alte Oper Charlottenburg" has excellent acoustics for classical music, which can also be used without microphones.
The management under Götz Friedrich and Helmut Baumann with selected top employees was exemplary and innovative. There was the first marketing director and the first event marketing in Germany. The GmbH was fully booked for several years and had a permanent occupancy rate of over 98 percent.
Important ensemble members and guests: Donnie Ray Albert , Albert Bonnema , Helmut Baumann , Terry Cook , Clamma Dale , Ute Lemper , Wilhelmenia Fernandez , Hildegard Knef , Angelika Milster , Helen Schneider , Caterina Valente , Daniel Washington , Elisabeth Werres , Charles Williams and Queen Yahna . Johannes Heesters was an honorary member .
Helmut Baumann also became director of the Theater des Westens in 1993 and in 1994 caused the house to be sold out for months with the 1950s revue Blue Jeans . In 1996 the 100th birthday of the theater was celebrated, but times became more difficult: The assignment to offer a varied program with four premieres or revivals per year was difficult to implement in view of the lower public subsidies and recruitment freeze, so that Helmut Baumann in the Summer 1999 left the house.
In 1999 Elmar Ottenthal became the new director. The non-profit operating GmbH, which belonged to the state of Berlin, got deeper and deeper into the red; with the exception of Falco meets Amadeus in 2000, the company could no longer build on the successes of the Baumann era.
In the 2001/2002 season, Georg Vierthaler was appointed artistic director and managing director of Theater des Westens GmbH by the supervisory board. He was also the managing director of the State Opera Unter den Linden .
In 2002 the Berlin Senate was able to implement the resolution passed in 1990 to sell the GmbH.
Stage entertainment
On September 24, 2002, the Berlin Senate decided to sell the Theater des Westens to the Dutch musical group Stage Entertainment ; the building itself remains in state ownership. Renovation work started in January 2003. According to the company, the renovation cost ten million euros.
On September 26, 2003, the theater reopened with the musical Les Misérables by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg .
Since then, Stage Entertainment no longer employs a permanent ensemble and shows long-term performances with Stage Entertainment productions, which can be seen alternately on various German and international stages.
In 2011 the theater was renamed Stage Theater des Westens .
