The national soccer team of Trinidad and Tobago is the national team of the Caribbean island state of Trinidad and Tobago . The nickname Soca Warriors (Soca warriors) refers to the soca musical genre popular in the country .
history
So far, the national team of the island state has qualified once for a world championship, namely for the 2006 tournament in Germany.
Participation in the CONCACAF Gold Cup has so far not been very successful. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2005 , the team failed with two points in the preliminary round. The island nation's team drew against Honduras (1: 1) and Panama (2: 2). The greatest success was the third place at the Goldcup 2000 . At that time there was still no match for third place, so Trinidad and Tobago and Peru shared third place.
Dwight Yorke and Stern John are the team's most successful players.
Football World Cup 2006
The national team's greatest success was qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany. In the CONCACAF qualification, Trinidad and Tobago achieved a narrow 2-1 win against the already qualified favorite from Mexico in the last game . The team came back in this crucial game after a missed penalty and a 0-1 deficit. In the following play-offs , the team met the Asian representative Bahrain , who had prevailed with two draws against Uzbekistan due to the higher number of away goals. The first leg was played on November 12, 2005 in Trinidad and Tobago, the second leg on November 16 in Bahrain. As the overall winner of both games, Trinidad and Tobago qualified for the 2006 World Cup for the first time. Trinidad and Tobago is the smallest country that has ever qualified for a World Cup.
The district town of Rotenburg (Wümme) in Lower Saxony was the residence and training location for the team during the World Cup in Germany. In the preparation phase before the World Cup, the team stayed in Bad Radkersburg in southern Styria .
In the first World Cup game against Sweden , the "Soca Warriors" managed a surprising 0-0, although the outsider only played ten after Avery John was sent off in the 46th minute. In the next two games they lost 2-0 to England and Paraguay , making them the only team to be eliminated after the preliminary round without a goal.
Qualification Football World Cup 2010
As part of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the team met the Bermuda national team in the second round of the CONCACAF zone . The first leg was lost 2-1 at home on June 14, but the second leg was won 2-0, with Stern John scoring the decisive goal . In the third round, Trinidad and Tobago met the United States , Guatemala and Cuba . In this group, the “Soca Warriors” took second place and then took part in the final group phase for qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. There they took last place and could not qualify for the World Cup.
Qualification Football World Cup 2014
In qualifying for the soccer World Cup 2014 , the team was eliminated in the second round as second in the group. The 2-1 win against the group leaders Guyana in the last group game was not enough to qualify for the next round, as Trinidad and Tobago had already been eliminated mathematically.
Tournaments
World Championship
Trinidad and Tobago have qualified for a World Cup 13 times since joining FIFA in 1964, but have only qualified once so far. In the all-time table of the World Cup finalists, Trinidad and Tobago is 67th.
