The Bangor University ( Welsh : Prifysgol Bangor) is a university based in Bangor in north-west Wales . It was founded in 1884 as the University College of North Wales (UCNW) . Until August 2007 it belonged to the former University of Wales as the University of Wales, Bangor (UWB) (Welsh: Prifysgol Cymru, Bangor) .
history
The university was founded on October 18, 1884 with 58 students and ten employees as the University College of North Wales in a former inn. The students received degrees from the University of London by 1893 . In 1893, Bangor was one of the three founding colleges of the University of Wales .
Initially, the facility was mostly funded by donations, not least by donations of workers from the slate mines of Gwynedd , who wanted to secure a university education for their children. Attending the existing universities was unaffordable for them. Some of the Welsh people, who were predominantly free churches ( Welsh Methodists ), were also subject to admission restrictions due to their denominational affiliation. In 1911 the university moved to the specially constructed Tudor-style building (now called Main Arts Bulding ) on the hill above the city. The Department of Welsh Studies under Bedwyr Lewis Jones (1933–1992) achieved international recognition in the 1970s. The university complex also includes the Theatr Gwynedd , which was built in the early 1970s and has been closed since the beginning of the academic year 2008. In 2003 the Center for Evidence-Based Conservation was founded.
In the 1970s the university was a center of Welsh nationalism. There were spectacular actions by radical Welsh students, such as disrupting lectures in English or destroying index cards of English books in the library. As a result, the Thatcher government even considered closing the school in the early 1980s. There are currently around 11,000 students enrolled at Bangor University.
In the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2008) around 50 percent of the research fields were considered to be world leaders. There, the university took first place in the UK ranking in accounting, banking and finance and the second best in electrical engineering. In 2011, it was placed among the world's top 275 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Bangor was named the best university in Wales for teaching and is among the top 15 UK universities for excellent teaching (Sunday Times University Guide for 2012).
