ASML headquarters in Veldhoven

The ASML Holding NV is a Dutch company and the world's largest provider of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry . The extremely complex machines play an important role in the manufacture of integrated circuits (microchips). 80% of all chip manufacturers ( foundries and IDMs ) worldwide are ASML customers and the global market share is 65%. ASML offers worldwide customer service at over 50 service points in 14 countries.

ASML is headquartered in Veldhoven in the Netherlands . The research and development department as well as the assembly under clean room conditions are also located there.

history

The company was founded in 1984 as a joint venture between ASM International (ASMI) and Philips , at that time still under the name "ASM Lithography".

After opening the headquarters in Veldhoven and a branch in Tempe (Arizona) in 1985, the company had around 100 employees.

In 1986 the first semiconductor exposure system was launched under the name PAS 2500 . This stepper worked with UV light with a wavelength of 436 nm. At the same time, a collaboration with the optics company Carl Zeiss began, which continues to this day .

ASMI sold its shares in the joint venture to Philips in 1988.

In March 1995, Philips listed ASML on the stock exchange. The company is listed on the AEX and NASDAQ .

In 2007 the first system (TWINSCAN XT: 1900i) that used immersion lithography came onto the market . Here the light from the optics is projected through a layer of water between the optics and the wafer.

In order to finance the development of systems for ever smaller structures, three of the most important customers ( Intel , TSMC and Samsung ) participated in ASML in 2012 and assured financial support for the development for the next five years.

In early 2013, the acquisition of Cymer, Inc., founded in San Diego in 1986 , was completed for 1.95 billion US dollars. With the takeover of the manufacturer of lasers , the development of machines for EUV lithography , which are required for the production of semiconductors with smaller structure sizes , should be secured. Cymer was unable to produce an EUV light source on its own and had given up development in 2012, but held important patents for the technology. The carbon dioxide lasers of the EUV scanners are supplied by the German machine manufacturer Trumpf , with whom a partnership in the field of EUV technology has existed since 2004. In July 2020 the takeover of the optics manufacturer Berliner Glas was announced.

market

The main competitors in the market of lithography systems for the semiconductor industry are Canon , Nikon and since 2017 at Veeco belonging Ultratech . In 2017, ASML was currently the only supplier to deliver the first twelve EUV machines to customers. Each machine is about the size of a bus and needs three Boeing 747s for delivery.
