ActOut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The #ActOut manifesto is a socio-political initiative that advocates greater acceptance of lesbian , gay , bisexual , transgender , queer , intersex and non-binary people in society and within the German film and television industry. The manifesto was initiated by Karin Hanczewski , Eva Meckbach and Godehard Gieseand published on February 5, 2021 signed by 185  acting people.

Content of the manifest

The manifesto was published on February 5, 2021 in the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung , accompanied by detailed interviews. For most of those involved, the action meant a coming-out in the form of a self-confession to their private way of life. At the same time, the text Manifest #ActOut was published on a separate website . The initiative was quickly spread on social media and the text was soon available in 16 languages. The manifesto begins with the statement:

“We are here and we are many!
We are actors and identify ourselves as lesbian , gay , bi , trans * , queer , inter and non-binary, among other things . "

The 185 signatories want to trigger food for thought and specifically address “ agents , casters , colleagues , producers , editors , directors ” (with typographical gender colon ). Triggers are negative experiences that many acting had to make workers during their careers when it comes to their own sexual orientation or their gender identity or their gender is. For example, Karin Hanczewski described in an interview with SZ-Magazin that she had been warned of a coming-out with regard to the casting of additional roles after she was cast for the crime series Tatort .

The undersigned state that even at work they were unable to deal openly with their private life without fear of professional consequences. For them it is primarily about creating more visibility and understanding for diversity and also showing more “facets” within films and series in the sense of social inclusion : “Our society has long been ready. The audience: inside are ready. ”The manifesto ends with the words:

“We look forward to all the new stories that we can represent and tell together.
The world is changing, we all contribute! "

Co-initiator Eva Meckbach explained to the NDR :

“When […] the film Aimée & Jaguar came out in the 1990s , I took the train to Ulm to the cinema and absorbed it with all my soul. To have these stories told, but also to have role models like Maren Kroymann , Ulrike Folkerts or Hape Kerkeling  - that was incredibly important so that you could feel for yourself: Who can I be in this world? Who can I be in this world? Many people will understand that you need role models from whom you can grow. That is why we were convinced that this visibility is very important to make this statement. "

Undersigned

The 185 people who signed include Karin Hanczewski , Eva Meckbach and Godehard Giese, among others:

In the interview, Hanczewski stated that some other actors did not want to join the manifesto at the moment, but would not rule it out at a later date.

reception

The German Film Academy declared its official support on the day of publication: “We would like to congratulate all those involved in #actout on this step and emphasize that we stand by their side. This step in solidarity is extremely important. We support #actout's demand to make other sexual and gender identities visible. "

At the same time, the film company UFA declared their solidarity and quoted their CEO Nico Hofmann : “SZ Magazin and the #actout initiative make us proud. A powerful appeal for tolerance, openness and for everyone involved - proof of your own sovereignty! ”In November 2020, the UFA made a commitment to“ more diversity in German films and series ”; she strives to " depict the groups gender , people of color , LGBTIQ + and people with disabilities in a way that corresponds to their proportion of the population."

The Max Ophüls film festival expressed "the greatest respect, solidarity and the fullest support for #ActOut!" The Berlinale's Twitter account linked the manifesto and declared in English : "We fully support their more diverse & inclusive vision of cinema" (We fully support their more diverse and inclusive vision of cinema).

Antoine Monot, Jr. , board member of the Bundesverband Schauspiel (BFFS), told dpa : “We support this and show solidarity with the 185 who have come out [...] I think it's very important that in 2021 we can live freely. […] This step shows many others what is possible ”.

The activist and filmmaker Rosa von Praunheim was happy to immediately link the SZ article on Facebook , along with a rainbow flag ( Rainbow flag). The ARD talker Anne Will immediately commented on the manifesto on Twitter : “This is strong”.

In several countries the media reported on the initiative, which has since been published in 16 languages. The American transgender actress Jamie Clayton described the action as "epic".

criticism

Sandra Kegel , head of the features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , fundamentally questioned the legitimacy of the “fourteen-page complaint” in her comment on the day of publication: “Of course, there are counterexamples from Hollywood to ' Soko ', and the signatories […] Underemployment suffered due to locked doors, did not suggest their permanent presence. The doors that you want to 'open' may already be wide open. "

The actor and theater director Dieter Hallervorden commented on the manifesto on Facebook : “Where's the storm? [...] nobody should mean by its particularity, to move it into the public foreground. The rule is: everyone has their own ! "
