The topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 and the Prussian first survey from 1844 both record the place as Bern .

In 1815/16 there were 40 people living in the village. In 1832, Bern was part of the Witzhelden parish of the Burscheid mayor . The place, which was categorized as a village according to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district , had 14 houses, a mill or factory and 21 agricultural buildings at that time. At that time, 77 residents lived in the place, all of them Protestant faith.

Due to the municipal code for the Rhine province, the parish of Witzhelden received the status of a municipality in 1845, left the Burscheid mayor and formed its own mayor's office from 1850 onwards . In the municipality lexicon for the province of Rhineland in 1885 14 houses with 72 inhabitants are given. In 1895 the place had 14 houses with 61 inhabitants, in 1905 twelve houses and 47 inhabitants.

On January 1, 1975, the municipality of Witzhelden was incorporated into Leichlingen with Bern.
