The place name is possibly derived from Ahd. Mezzôn , which means something like hewn . Metzholz is a place where timber was obtained by working on felled trees. The map Topographia Ducatus Montani from 1715 shows two farms under the name Mertsholt . In the 18th century, the place belonged to the parish of Leichlingen in the Bergisches Amt Miselohe . The topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 and the Prussian first survey from 1844 both record the place as Metzholz . Metzholz was in the Leichlingen area, right on the border with the parish of Witzhelden, which formed its own mayor's office and community from 1845 to 1974 .

In 1815/16 83 people lived in the village. In 1832 Metzholz belonged to the mayor's office in Leichlingen . The place, which was categorized as a village according to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district , had 17 residential houses and 18 agricultural buildings at that time. At that time, 79 residents lived in the village, all of whom were Protestant.

In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province in 1885, 29 houses with 117 inhabitants are listed. In 1895 the place had 30 houses with 117 inhabitants, in 1905 27 houses and 102 inhabitants.
