Location of Roderbirken in Leichlingen (Rhineland)

Roderbirken is a suburb of Leichlingen (Rhineland) , a town in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia , which is surrounded by a forest plot of the same name, which is believed to have given it its name.

Roderbirken is known as a clinic location. The Roderbirken Rehabilitation Clinic specializes in cardiovascular diseases and treats an average of 3500 patients per year. The suburb itself is surrounded by beech forests and is a popular destination for joggers, hikers and walkers.

history

  • 1906: The "Roderbirken People's Sanatorium" is opened on 100 acres of forest that used to belong to the Roderhof . It is equipped for 145 patients (initially only women) and initially looks after "nervous patients".
  • 1910: The clinic is expanded to include a men's ward with 150 beds. This will be followed by houses for the staff, and the clinic will have its own church and bathhouse. In times of war it serves as a hospital.
  • 1910 to 1928: A cable car runs from Pattscheid station to Roderbirken, with which coal and building materials are transported. It is 2180 meters long.
  • 1963: The clinic specializes in heart disease.
  • 1979: The new clinic is inaugurated. Including two basement floors and the first floor, it has a total of ten floors, plus a swimming pool and gym and cost 52 million marks.

Residents

The old medical center, now demolished

Over the years, the Roderbirken settlement has developed around the clinic. Around 150 people live here, including clinic employees and their relatives. Some buildings that belong to the old sanatorium and are over 100 years old may be demolished despite their historical significance. The historic forester's house Roderbirken, on the other hand, like other older houses on Roderweg, has gone into private ownership and is now a seminar location.

Trivia

Roderbirken is a filming location for the Cologne crime scene "Gefangen" , which was broadcast for the first time on May 17, 2020.
