Location of Merlenforst in Leichlingen (Rhineland)

Merlenforst is a location in the town of Leichlingen (Rhineland) in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district that emerged from a court .

Location and description

Merlenforst is east of the L288 state road in the immediate vicinity of the Stockberg , Am Adler , Hüttchen and Windgesheide residential areas , all of which are within a 200-meter radius. The original settlement core of the village, which was still independent in the first half of the 20th century, lies west of the Merlenforst street, which is named after it, at the height of the pedestrian bridge over the railway tracks. The entire area, which is now closed, is now named after the neighboring Windgesheide residential area.

To the west of Merlenforst were the Leichlinger Sandberge in Langenfeld's urban area , which were largely removed for sand extraction. Other neighboring places, mostly those in the western suburbs of Leichlingen, are Kellerhansberg , Unterschmitte , Roßlenbruch , Bockstiege and Bahnhof . Ziegwebersberg and Staderhof have retained their independent location.

history

Merlenforst was east of the Sandstrasse , an old road from Aufderhöhe to Opladen and today's state road L288. The Prussian first recording from 1844 lists the place as Merlenforst , as does the Leichlinger municipality map from 1830.

Eight residents lived in the village in 1815/16. In 1832 Merlenforst belonged to the mayor's office in Leichlingen . The place, which was categorized as a court town according to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district , had two residential buildings and two agricultural buildings at that time. At that time 19 residents lived in the place, two of them Catholic and 17 Protestant. In 1867 the Gruiten – Cologne – Mülheim railway line was opened near Merlenforst .

In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province in 1885, six houses with 31 residents are given. In 1895 the place had four houses with 29 inhabitants, in 1905 five houses and 29 inhabitants.

From the middle of the 20th century, the gaps in the residential and commercial development with the neighboring residential areas were closed and Merlenforst became part of the western suburb of Leichlingen. In the 1960s, a pedestrian bridge was built over the railway tracks, which replaced a level crossing at Windgesheide and which had to be closed in 2013 due to dilapidation. After the city had given up the bridge as expendable, the construction of a new bridge began in March 2015 due to local residents' protests for 600,000 euros.
