history

Schmerbach was first mentioned in 1327 as in the Smerberg . Smer ( ahd. Smero , mndd. Smer ) means fat in the sense of rich. The current place name indicates the location of the settlement on the Schmerbach of the same name. In the 18th century, the place belonged to the parish of Leichlingen in the Bergisches Amt Miselohe . The topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 shows the place as Schmerbacher M. This map series and the Prussian first survey from 1844 both show a mill symbol there, the latter also showing other residential buildings.

In 1815/16 five residents lived in the village. In 1832 Schmerbach belonged to the mayor's office in Leichlingen . The place, which was categorized as a mill according to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf administrative district , had a residential house, a mill and an agricultural building at that time. At that time there were seven people living in the village, all of whom were Protestant.

In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province in 1885, three houses with 16 inhabitants are given. In 1895 the place had four houses with 18 inhabitants, in 1905 four houses and 15 inhabitants.
