history

Street course (Circuito)

The first races were held at Mugello in 1914 on the Circuito stradale del Mugello , a 66 km long route on public roads similar to the Targa Florio in Sicily . After the First World War, the course experienced its first heyday. Drivers like Alberto Ascari and Enzo Ferrari competed here. Years in the shadow of the Mille Miglia followed . In 1955 the length of the route was reduced to 19 km. The end of the Mille Miglia after the serious accident in Guidizzolo and increasing interest in racing drew attention back to Mugello, where the original 66 km races were held from 1964 to 1969, which were part of the World Cup from 1965 to 1967.

The starting point was in the south at San Piero a Sieve . At Scarperia , where the Autodrom was built, the SP 503 leads north over the Passo del Giogo , on to Firenzuola , from there west to meet the SR 65 at Selva , which is the section between Bologna in the Mille Miglia and formed Florence, which led over the Futapass . The counter-clockwise round was closed via Barberino di Mugello .

Udo Schütz and Gerhard Mitter won the last world championship round in a Porsche 910 after Günter Klass had a fatal accident. In 1968 the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 from Lucien Bianchi , Nanni Galli and Nino Vaccarella won against the Porsche from Rico Steinemann and Jo Siffert , and in 1969 Arturo Merzario won in an Abarth 2000.

In June 1970, a group of pedestrians were injured and a baby was killed in a traffic accident in Ospedaletto di Firenzuola. It turned out that the accident driver Spartaco Dini had previously been fired from the Alfa Romeo factory team and had presumably trained illegally. The race planned three weeks later was canceled.

In the 2020 Formula 1 season, the Tuscan Grand Prix is to take place in Mugello for the first time . This was added to the calendar at a later date because many originally planned venues were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic . It is the 1000th Formula 1 race of Scuderia Ferrari , which has taken over the name sponsorship for the race. Traditionally, the Italian Grand Prix is to take place in Monza a week earlier .

Circuit (Autodromo)

On June 23, 1974, a circuit was finally put into operation, which forms the basis for today's racetrack.
