The Fiat 125 is a middle class or upper middle class automobile model , which was mainly built as a sedan . It was produced by Fiat in Turin from 1967 to 1972 and in South America until 1982. A number of body variants , especially from Latin America, and special models as well as license replicas , in particular the Polski Fiat 125p , which itself formed the platform for further derivatives, also exist.
history
The 125 was developed under the direction of Dante Giacosa . It came onto the market in the spring of 1967 as a luxurious, fast sedan and externally larger variant of the Fiat 124 , which had identical parts of the body and a more modern rear axle, and replaced the 1300/1500 and / or 1800 series . With its more straight lines, the new model series was more in line with contemporary tastes of the late 1960s than its predecessors. In Turin, the series was discontinued in mid-1972 and replaced by the Fiat 132 . After that, the model was continued to be produced by Fiat and later Sevel in South America.
Fiat concluded license agreements with a number of other companies to build modified 125 cc . Of these, the 125p from FSO is the most widely used model. Mostly on the basis of the derived 125p , companies in Morocco, Egypt, Indonesia and Yugoslavia were licensed to manufacture 125s - often on the basis of Fiat and / or FSO manufactured components.
In addition, the platform of the 125 forms the basis of other car models such as the Lada 2107 and the FSO Polonez .
Fiat Italia
In 1968 the 125 Spezial was added, which achieved a top speed of 175 km / h with an output of 74 kW (100 PS). In 1971 the 125 Spezial was revised. In total, a little over 600,000 copies of the model ran on the assembly line in Turin.
Coupé derivative
Carrozzeria Vignale took the 125S as the basis for the conversion into the Coupé 125S Samantha , which can be rated as a classic design of the 1960s. About 100 copies of this variant were built. In 1969 the 125S Samantha cost around DM 15,000 ( adjusted for inflation today around € 27,999).
Tuning versions
125 OTS Scorpion
In 1969, Alconi designed a special model for the South African market . In this model, known as the 125 OTS Scorpion , the engine of the 125 was modified so that it had 123.5 hp; the basic version cost 2795 R (the equivalent of about 14,199 DM; adjusted for inflation today about € 25,583) in the basic version.
125T
About 100 copies of the right-hand drive Fiat 125T Completely Knocked Down , equipped with a 125 HP engine, were exported for the New Zealand market .
Production in Latin America
On the basis of the Italian 125 , Fiat Concord in Argentina initially produced the Fiat 1600 with an 88 hp engine as a sedan from 1969 . From 1970 the sedan Fiat 1600 90HP with a two horsepower engine and the Coupé Fiat 1600 Sport with another two horsepower more powerful engine were delivered. The production of these models based on the 125 was discontinued in 1972. In addition, based on the 1600, a pick-up with the nickname Multicarga was offered for sale in the 1973 model year .
Production of the 125 began in Argentina from September 1972 ; among other things, modifications were made to the radiator grille , the dashboard and the fenders . By 1982 the 125 was built as a four-door sedan, pick-up with the nickname Multicarga , in three coupé versions and as a five-door station wagon with the nickname Familiar . From 1980 the 125 was built by Sevel Argentina ; after a facelift, these vehicles were given the nickname Mirafiori . A total of 188,791 vehicles were built in Argentina in ten years.
In Chile , only the sedan was produced in small numbers. Most of the specimens permitted in this Andean country are from Argentine production. However, as representative vehicles of the Salvador Allende government , they represent a cultural and historical symbol in this country.
License replicas
From the 125 or 125S , there are a number of Lizenznachbauten . There is also the hybrid version of the Polski Fiat 125p , which itself was replicated in various production sites outside Poland .
125p
The 125p was built by FSO in Poland and exported to various European countries. Technically, the 125p was based on the previous model Fiat 1300 , whose chassis and drive train were transplanted into the modified and simplified body of the Fiat 125. There was also a station wagon, an in-house development by FSO, which - unlike the Argentine 125 station wagon and the Soviet license model of the Fiat 124 (Shiguli / Lada) - was made with the rounded rear doors of the sedan.
Zastava 125 PZ
The 125p was manufactured in Yugoslavia by Zastava as the 125 PZ . The car with a top speed of 153.6 km / h was initially produced in parallel to the previous model, the Zastava 1500 , which was licensed directly by Fiat and cost YUD 42,760.35 in 1971 (the equivalent of $ 2,153, or DEM 7,277, adjusted for inflation today about € 12,463).
Thailand
A 125S (next to a 124S ) was also built in Thailand . The basis was also the 125p .
Indonesia
The Indonesian government equipped the first head of government of annexed West Papua with a 125 .
Nasr 125
In Egypt , the 125 was to be rebuilt from 1971. However, it was not until 1973 that Kits Completely Knocked Down - both Fiat and FSO - built Nasr 125s . The cars were assembled at the Egyptian Light Transport Manufacturing Company and El Nasr Automotive Manufacturing Company . The Nasr was powered by a maximum 51½ kW (70 hp) engine with a displacement of 1,483 cm³.
SOMACA
In Morocco , SOMACA produced a replica of the 125 from late May 1968 to 1973 . In total, a little more than 32,000 vehicles of the 124 , 125 and 128 models were reproduced.
SEAT
SEAT did not produce a 125cc in Spain , but the Seat 1430 took over the front and dashboard from the 125 .
technology
engine
The Fiat Twin-Cam engine developed under Aurelio Lampredi had two overhead camshafts driven by a toothed belt and developed 66 kW (90 hp) at 5700 rpm from a displacement of 1608 cm³. The maximum torque of 130 Nm was at 4000 rpm. What was new was the adjustment of the valve clearance without removing the camshaft using adjusting plates.
The driving performance reached values that were in the range of sporty cars such as Alfa Romeo , Lancia or BMW .
body
The angular shape of the limousine body was derived from the design of the Fiat 124. The front section had angular twin headlights framed in chrome.
Furnishing
According to Auto Bild, the Fiat 125 was the first vehicle with standard interval switching for the windshield wipers , but the Australian version of the Ford Galaxie was already equipped with this detail as standard in model year 1965.
reception
In Germany, the 125 was particularly popular because of its low purchase price; The equipment was also found to be above average.
Auto Bild classifies the 125 as “completely forgotten” these days.
The 125 rarely appears as a reference in pop culture. However, there are exceptions:
In his collection of short stories, Sri Sumarah, and other stories , Umar Kayam highlights the commonness of 125 in Indonesia:
"Sprinkle a few anchovy on top of the water if you want to catch the really big fish. (A free translation into Indonesian might be: Use a Fiat 125 as bait if you want to land a Rolls Royce at Tanjung Priok port.)"
“Sprinkle a few anchovies on the water if you want to catch the big fish. (A free translation into Indonesian would be: Use a Fiat 125 as bait if you want to land a Rolls Royce in the port of Tanjung Priok .) "
In the Chilean context, the Marxist critics Ariel Dorfman and Armandi Mattelart saw poor industrial workers “bombarded” with advertising photos of 125s in 1975 .
