With a total of 3,054 (islands, islets, islets, rocky islands, rocks and reefs) islands , Greece manages around 82 percent of all islands in the Mediterranean , but their area is just under a quarter of the Mediterranean islands and only around 19 percent of the Greek land area. Nevertheless, they span a large area: from Agios Nikolaos as the northernmost island to the southern tip of Gavdos in the south it is around 695 kilometers, between Othoni in the far west and Strongyli , the easternmost island in Greece, there are around 992 kilometers as the crow flies. According to the last Greek census from 2011, 113 islands in the sea and four inland islands are still permanently inhabited.

Almost all Greek islands are in the Ionian Sea or in the Aegean Sea , whose late medieval Italian name arcipelago became the term for archipelagos par excellence. They are roughly divided into the island groups of the Ionian Islands in the sea of the same name, while according to ancient tradition the islands of the Aegean are divided into the groups of the Cyclades and Sporades . Four of the thirteen Greek regions ( Ionian Islands , North and South Aegean and Crete ) extend exclusively to islands. Modern names for large Greek archipelagos are North Aegean Islands , East Aegean Islands and Dodecanese .

In the mountainous country of Greece, almost all of the larger islands are mountainous. The highest point on an island is 2456 m. ü. d. M. the summit of psiloritis in Crete. Some of the islands are of volcanic origin , the most famous of them are probably the islands of the last in the 2nd millennium BC. Be the erupted volcano Santorini (cf. Minoan eruption ).

The island of Corfu (also Kerkyra) is also called the green island thanks to the many olive trees. The capital lies between the new and the old fortress. The two fortresses are said to be connected underground, which is largely thanks to the Venetians and British.
