The Cesta I. triedy 65 ( Slovak for '1st order street 65'), I / 65 for short , is a 1st order street in Slovakia . It crosses the west and center of the country and connects the cities of Nitra and Martin . The road is mostly in hill or basin terrain; only at the town of Kremnica does it cross the Kremnitzer Mountains .

In the sections Čaradice – Hronský Beňadik and Nová Baňa – Žarnovica, the I / 65 has been replaced without replacement by the R1 expressway .

course

The I / 65 begins in the east of Nitra, in the Chrenová district, and its first part runs through the Danube hill country ; mountains Tribeč (near Nitra) and Pohronský Inovec (near Zlaté Moravce) are visible. From Hronský Beňadik it copies the river Hron ; between Nová Baňa and Žarnovica it shares a route with the R1 expressway . Behind Žarnovica it runs on the northern slope of the Schemnitz Mountains ; shortly after Ladomerská Vieska / Žiar nad Hronom it goes up in the Kremnitzer Mountains. She comes to the “golden” mining town of Kremnica .

After a pass at Kremnické Bane lies the Turz ( Turiec ) landscape ; first comes the spa town of Turčianske Teplice and then the town of Martin . Shortly after Martin it ends at a junction with road I / 18 .

Street I / 65D

In Martin there is another street with the number I / 65D, which mainly serves as Martin's western bypass. It is 6.8 km long, has partially four lanes and also ends at road I / 18.

Others

The section between Nitra and Zlaté Moravce (about 30 km) is often referred to in the Slovak media as the death road due to numerous serious traffic accidents (often frontal collisions). The reason for this is said to be the wide road in a confusing hilly landscape and the associated dangerous overtaking maneuvers; Between 1997 and 2006 there were 2544 accidents and 79 people were killed. After its opening on October 28, 2011, the new R1 expressway will at least carry long-distance traffic.

The section between Príbovce and Turčianske Teplice (about 15 km) was considered to be one of the worst roads in Slovakia due to the damage to the concrete pavement. This was built in the 1960s and was built to serve as a military road for tanks in the event of an armed conflict. Despite the risk of loosening concrete slabs, only minor, often temporary renovation work had been carried out until 2017. In May 2017, a two-year complete renovation began, during which the previous concrete pavement was replaced by asphalt. The work was completed in June 2019 and cost a total of 24.8 million euros.
