John Allen (politician)

John Allen (born June 12, 1763 in Great Barrington , Berkshire County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  July 31, 1812 in Litchfield , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1797 and 1799 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Allen attended public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree at Litchfield Law School and his admission as a lawyer in 1786, he began to practice in Litchfield in his new profession. Allen became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton in the late 1790s . Between 1793 and 1796 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives .

In the 1796 congressional election, held nationwide, Allen was elected to the United States House of Representatives for the sixth Connecticut seat. There he took over from Zephaniah Swift on March 4, 1797 . But since he already renounced another candidacy in the next elections, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1799 .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Allen was a member of the State Council and the Supreme Court of Errors between 1800 and 1806 . He then worked as a lawyer again in Litchfield until his death in July 1812. His son John (1802-1887) sat between 1837 and 1841 for the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives.
